I'm allergic to my dog- Help!

We recently found out that my dog is causing my entire body to be covered in itchy hives :( Being on Zyrtec helps a lot, but I can't take it while pregnant and we want another child soon. (Not to mention that allergy medicines have some long term side effects that I'd like to avoid!) Getting rid of our dog is not an option, so I'm just looking for ideas on how to keep our home as hair free as possible! We've been working on keeping up with the vaccuuming, but is there a good brush I can get for her, any type of shampoo that will help, ect?

I very rarely post here, but when I do everyone is super helpful!

  • There is good allergy info in the FAQs, located in the green header on the Pets board.

  • A few quick thoughts:

Leather furniture will hold less hair than fabric, in case you can look into switching the furniture the dog is on/around most (keeping him off the furniture would be hugely helpful, too).

No doggie in the bedroom: this can be your "safe area."

Hardwood floors are easier to keep clean of hair and dander. You can look into replacing carpeting with solid surfaces.

AllerPet wipes can help cut down majorly on the allergens that pets would leave around your home. Just Google them for their site and more info.

  • Oh no!! I feel you pain! I've been taking Zyrtec D for about 8 years now & to my knowledge I am not allergic to dogs. But ever since Dec I've been having issues w/unexplanable hives....I've stopped taking the Zyrtec D all together (which, then I went in to withdrawl from...& the major symptom is...more hives Sad ) but am still getting them & I have no idea why. They usually come on later in the day (after 7pm)...which is after I've been home from work for awhile.....

Long story, anyway, just wanted you let you know that you are not alone! Im terrified to go to the Allergist & find out that now I am suddenly (well, developed over time) now allergic to dogs!!

Back when I was little my Mom used to get monthly allergy shots, might not be an option for you, I just don't know. All the tips PP's mentioned are a great place to start though!

    GL though!!

  • They had a good article on allergies in Cat Fancy this month. Some good tips were to keep cat (works for dogs too!) out of bedroom/bed (I usually wake up to the cat I'm most allergic to snuggled up on my pillow pressed against me lol). Have someone else vacuum when you are not home since that sends allergens in the air and to get a hepa air purifier. Hope some of this helps. Ine thing that helps me a lot is getting fresh air. Even negative degrees I will open the windows at least once a week for like 30 minutes. It's cold and the heat and a space heated run the whole time but it helps.
  • Thanks ladies! The FAQ's were really helpful :) Our vacuum has a hepa filter built into it, but I will check out the wipes and maybe a freestanding filter. Right now we have a blanket on Xena's spot on the couch, which is as far from me as you can get. I would feel awful if we didn't let her get on the couch at all! I'll continue using a topical cream when the hives get really bad and I'll follow all the suggestions. Thanks again for your help! This board has always been amazing when I've had issues with our dog and I really appreciate it.
  • You can take Zyrtec while pg. I did through both my pregnancies. You just can't take the D varity.
