Night terrors?

if you have had experience w/ your child or someone you know having them, can you tell me about them?

how long did they last? did you wake them up before they started to get them to not have them? how frequent were they?

the past 3-4 nights avery has been fighting going to bed until 10:30-11, and has been waking up around 1:30 screaming like she is being murdered, unconsolable. nothing we do helps, she just throws herself on the floor and freaks out, kicking and flailing. we dont want her to hurt herself but she wont let us hold her. she breaks free of our arms and throws herself to the floor and screams.

i talked to the Ped and they think it sounds like night terrors. i am just beyond exhausted and it is so upsetting seeing her like that, even though they say she has no memory of them...

just looking for some help if you have been in this situation..thanks

Re: Night terrors?

  • I had them with Sabrina. They came on right after her T&A surgery..They happened within 2 hours of her falling asleep - almost like clock work.  They lasted about 20 minutes or so. She would remain on the bed and just cry/scream/flail around. I would just sit on her bed and just say shhh..mommy's here over and over until she went back to bed.  It went on for about 2 weeks and then they stopped. Our ped said to just stand by and make sure she doesn't hurt herself but to let it run its course.
  • M gets them if he's sick. In fact that is often how I know he'll wake up sick the next day.

Sometimes he is somewhat responsive and tells us to "get out of my room" or "i don't want you" but then if we we leave he completely freaks. So he is somewhat awake but not really. If that makes sense.

Generally if he is somewhere where he won't hurt himself, I just grab a pillow and lay on his floor until he comes out of it. Then suddenly he'll be completely alert and scream "I need a tissue to wipe my tears. Why didn't you get me a tissue?" He'll literally wipe his tears and then either go back to bed or he'll wipe his tears and ask for a walk (with his head on our shoulder) to our room and back. And then he goes back to sleep.

It's freaky and sucks to just watch him but generally if we try to intervene he gets worse. But if he moves into the hallway or starts throwing stuff I have to somewhat try to stop it so that he doesn't hurt himself or wake his brother. Sometimes taking him downstairs works.

Now my friend had a foster son that had them a million times worse and she had to video tape them because the neighbors could hear them and she was concerned they'd take him away if they reported her. Poor thing.

  • so you think if she climbs out of bed and is throwing herself on the floor, as long as i hang out in the room and make sure that she doesnt hurt herself then thatll be ok? last night she got out into the rest of the house and was like hiding in the laundry room when i was trying to pick her up and hold her..

  • M never stays in bed. I just try to keep him in his room if possible.
  • Stephanie had them last summer after we moved to the new house. They were just a phase since they stopped after a few weeks.  Have there been any big changes in her life recently? Maybe it's stress related to that if so. I hope it passes quickly.
