Needle Crafts

I am debating taking up a needle craft.  Does anyone do needlepoint?  Cross stitch?  Embroidery (pillows or something, not clothing.) Is this reserved for my unmarried 70 year old aunt?

Re: Needle Crafts

  • LOL!  I haven't cross stitched in years--but I learned when I was 6.  Of the three, I'd say cross stitch is the easiest.  I LOVE the look of hand embroidery and think it is the most versatile of the three, so if I were to pick up a needle craft, that would be the one I would want to learn.

  • I like stamped cross-stich and embroidery.  They are both fairly easy to learn and there are some good, easy kits at most craft stores that you can start with for a really minimal investment to see if you like it.  The patterns aren't all grandma either.  I made a really cute coffee one for my kitchen.
  • My sister cross-stitches a lot! She is in her mid-twenties, so no it is not reserved for your 70 year old aunt!

  • I cross-stiched when I was little and I loved it! I've been thinking about getting back into it, but I also am trying to learn to knit and have lots of sewing projects on my queue, so I'm holding off. I say go for it!

  • I don't see how they are for unmarried 70 year old women.....I don't think I'd be able to see those tiny holes when I'm that old.  Counted cross stitch is pretty simple.  If I were going to pick up a needle craft now, I'd try embriodery.

  • I did counted cross stitch for years when I was a kid.  It's really pretty easy, so long as you have the patience for it.  The only thing that I don't like is the lack of "instant justification."  It just goes too slow for me.  I knit now, and I tend to pick 1-2 skein projects that go quickly, so if you don't mind a project that takes a while to finish, than go for it.

  • I dabbled in cross stitch when I was probably 6 or 7... my grandma taught me.  Then in HS my mom taught me needlepoint.  I have an unfinished belt that I may or may not finish.

I would suggest not starting with needlepoint due to price.  While it makes beautiful stuff... it's SO EXPENSIVE for the canvases.  Every time I think about picking it up again, I gag at the $150 belt canvases and convince myself that even nice yarn is a better deal and I go back to knit/crochet.
