Best carpeting for pets?

Hello everyone :)

H and I are getting a quote for carpeting this weekend but before we take the plunge I wanted to ask you all what your experiences are. I have two big dogs (60-70 lbs each) who love the play and wrestle. I've noticed we have some extra scratches in our hardwood floors from their roughhousing. It's no big deal now because the floors are in bad shape and have been since we moved in.

We'd really like carpet to help with insulation, give our family room a better look, provide a softer surface for the dogs to lay on (and for future babies to play on) but I don't want to waste the money if it's going to be ripped by silly pups.

So I'd like to know...do you have carpeting? Does it hold up to your pets? What kind of carpeting would you suggest (I've read that nylon holds up better)? Is this crazy? Should I just keep my hardwood floors? lol

Thank you!

In the next year or two, we will be switching the entire house to laminate. Our kitchen, dining room, and bathroom are already laminate. It doesn't show scratches like hardwood does, and stands up well to all sorts of pets. We'll put large rugs down in the house, but we will never put carpet down in a house again-our carpet shows tons of wear and tear from dog wrestling and zoomies.

  • AgreE with katelyn in laminate.  We've lived in two carpeted places with them and it's just hard to keep clean.  We have it now and it picks up long, fuzz, everything easily.  And I feel like it isn't that sanitary.  But it does make our house quiet.

  • I would suggest large area rugs too. I buy relatively cheap ones (less than $100) & replace as needed.

  • I agree with PPs that carpet may not be the best option, especially since you're thinking of putting it in (rather than dealing with something that's already there).  Our house (which we just bought in September) has wall-to-wall carpet in the upstairs hallway, guest bedroom, and the office (where the dogs stay while we are at work), and it is holding up surprisingly well.

I know nothing about carpet, so the only way I can describe it is that it's low-pile and durable, kind of looks like Berber but not nearly that nice.  It's a tan/cream color, which works great with 2 pugs (fur blends in).  However, my dogs are 17 lbs. and 20 lbs. and total couch potatoes in the house, so the wear and tear they put on carpet is nothing compared to 60-70 lb. dogs.  Even so, we will probably rip it out eventually (except maybe in the office which may be a nursery some day) and go with non-carpeted floors in the whole house.

  • Tile is my favorite for multiple big pets having had tile before.  We have carpet now and big dogs and they are just so rough on everything.  We are constantly shampooing the carpets to keep it clean.  Our carpets are are light color which I do not recommend.

  • We have laminate on two levels of our house, but our finished basement has the new vinyl.  I highly recommend the vinyl--it's not the old, roll-out kind, but the new strips that they install with adhesive.  It's like the fancy flooring they do at the Harris Teeter produce section.  It's VERY durable and looks nice.

  • My sister is getting the new vinyl flooring throughout her whole first floor.  It looks exactly like wood, even installs with the tongue and groove.  I swear I can not tell the difference and it's waaay more durable than anything else.  I wish I would have known about this stuff when we built our house, I would have put it in the whole first floor as well.

  • Buying a house with no carpet is the best decision I ever made. I also recommend area rugs over hard flooring.

  • Agree with everyone.  The best carpet for a home with pets is no carpet. :)
