Gross but I gotta ask. Max has always been an every 2 day pooper. Lately he has gone three days with no poop. He was in the bathroom for literally an hour. He was in obvious pain and was crying. He definitely tore but he he FINALLY went and it was seriously the largest thing I ever saw in my life. We give him Benefiber and Miralax (the ped told us to but I try not to give him too much b/c i am suspicious of it) and I cut out bananas etc. He eats prune puree (baby food) willingly and he will now and then drink the prune juice if i dilute it. Aside from an enema, what the F can I do to make him go more? The problem I think is he will only drink milk. He REFUSES most days to drink ANY water. I am going to speak to his teachers tomorrow and let them know I would like them to give Max at least Dixie cup size servings of water every couple of hours. The kid does not drink water at ALL!!!
Any other ideas?? I might even start putting prune puree in food! The kicker is, he had prunes at breakfast and lunch and has the miralx too and he was ont he can for over an hour!! Poor kid--I dont want him to get problems or have a serious intestinal problem!!!
Re: Serious constipation issues in 4.5 year old TMI
unfortunately I know too much about constipation from Caleb.
Pear nectar (diluted)
blueberries
watermelon
Granola (usually makes Caleb go w/in an hour!)
Fiber One Brownies
Just keep him hydrated. If he wont drink water, give him something else watered down. Hydration plays a BIG part in constipation. Caleb drinks about 6 cups of lemonade (mostly water) a day in addition to his a.m and dinner milk.
All should help keep the stool soft enough for him to pass it. If it gets to the point where he's already constipated, your only route is a suppository. You have to get the hard stuff out first.
Good luck. It SUCKS to watch your kid suffer like that. I cant tell you how many times I've had to help Caleb go. Fortunately it seems to be under control lately.
it sucks. Griffin goes every day- but it's often hard/painful, and he has had some of those HUGE poops, too - we are amazed at times.
we now give him miralax about every other day, give him one of the fiber gummie bears each day (they sell them near the fleet kid stuff), and try to make sure he eats enough veggies and fruit.
we have had 3 days in the past couple years that the entire day is spent with him crying and not being able to go --- those times we have used the suppositories, etc... it's MISERABLE. So we try to avoid it by doing the above.
I'm considering taking him to see a GI in the area that I know is Rx'ing the product I sell to kids --- it's not approved for kids (yet) but I know it's very safe and would be happy to try and see if it helps Griffin.... i'm more comfortable giving him that daily than miralax... b/c the Miralax often causes craming - so it's still not that great..
Fiber One brownies help me too! LOL.
I will get the gummy fiber vitamins and i am going to try and hide broccoli puree etc. We have that Jessica Seinfeld cookbook somewhere I will break that out.
He def needs to stop drinking the milk....and hit water. It is HORRIBLE to see a little kid panic and cry hysterically because it hurts. Poor thing.
S has the same problem. We had such a horrible experience in September that we have been using Miralax ever since but DH wants to wean her. I am too scared.
We had to cut down on her milk. She used to drink water but stopped. We started giving juice. Will he drink juice?
She eats a decent amount of fiber (Fiber One bread, Fiber One brownies, granola bars) but it doesn't help. We also tried the gummy vitamins and they didn't help. We might try Benefiber but I hear too much fiber is a bad thing too.
It sucks. I'm sorry
