Bridge collapse

So the route between Murray and basically everything to the east of it passes over 2 lakes using 2 very old, very sh!tty bridges. We are talking 80 year old bridges that really should have been closed decades ago and rebuilt. My family and I have literally driven over these bridges thousands of times and when you're on top of them, you do your best not to think about how decrepit the thing is and just go as fast as you can. They are in the process of 'replacing' these bridges, but haven't actually started on it so who knows how log it will be.

Well, one of those bridges was just struck by a barge about an hour ago and collapsed. The whole center portion of it is laying on the towboat, which is the only thing keeping it out of the water. H has found an online feed of the EMS scanner (why does that even exist?) and we heard no one on the boat was injured but have yet to hear if anyone was on the bridge at the time of the collapse. Then, my mom goes and puts this on FB:

(My sister) works in Nashville on Tues and Thurs and sometimes will come through (hometown) on her way home and have dinner with me before heading back to Murray. Tonight I taught a diabetes support group so (sister) went on to murray, crossing the bridge around 7. Had we had dinner together, the timing might have put her on the bridge when it happened.

Great mom. Now I'll probably not be able to sleep for thinking about all the what ifs.

Re: Bridge collapse

  • I am glad no one on the barge was hurt and hopefully there wasn't anyone on the bridge. There was a bridge collapse in Minneapolis awhile ago but it was the interstate during rush hour. I had been on that bridge about 20 minutes before it collapsed into the river. I am so grateful I was on time that day.

  • I just saw your post about this on FB... so scary.

  • That is so, so scary! Glad everyone on the barge is okay, praying that no one was on the bridge at that time.

  • Apparently no one was on the bridge at the time, so that's good. The news just showed an example of the ship that was goin under it, and holy hell, a three story cargo ship (if that is correct) had NO business being on Ky lake going under that bridge.

  • That's so scary! So glad no one was hurt. Ever since the bridge collapse in MN that MrsDan mentioned, I always think about that when crossing a bridge.

  • So scary! Glad there were no injuries and I am shaking my head at the person who decided it was a good idea to try and go under the bridge!
