boarding

Fourth Anniversary

We boarded our dog for the first time, just 1 night. We dropped him off at noon at picked him up the next morning. We were out of town just for the night but can't take him with us. Also we thought it might be good practice when we board him for 5 days for a vacation in 3 weeks.

Anyway, when we picked him up it was 2 hrs after the daycare opened, we expected him to have rested up but he was lethargic, sleepy, tired. He goes to same daycare and would be there from 5-10 hrs at a time (1-2 times a week). I have never seen him come home from daycare that exhausted (except for his very first day there). And he was this way pretty much the whole day and was back to his normal self the next morning. DH said when he picked him up he was not his usual self, did not jump or got excited about getting picked up.

I think that he may not have had a restful sleep. Maybe there were other dogs boarded and that was too much distraction from sleeping? He is scared of barking dogs. Its the only reason I could think of. Maybe he will get used to sleeping there? Now I am worried if we board him for 5 nights...he is going to be super exhausted and wonder if that could be bad. Will he get used to it after 2 days? I am looking into other options but since we are new to this town, we don't know anyone who takes dogs into their homes for boarding, which is something I think may work better for him.

Re: boarding

  • Our dogs always come home from being boarded and sleep the whole day. 1 of them gets anxious when she is not at home, and around a lot of other dogs, and the other LOVES being around other dogs, so he probably barely sleeps the whole time.

I have never been worried about it. It's not that big of deal to have tired dogs. And if they're sleeping it gives us time to unpack and do laundry etc when we get home from a trip.

When they get older if I feel like it's too hard on them then I will re- evaluate the situation, but for now, it doesn't bother me and I don't worry about them being too tired when they come home from being boarded.

  • I agree with Sakelp. Your pup was probably just excited being in a new environment overnight. Could you ask them how he responded while he was there?

  • I wouldn't worry too much about it.  As long as he is well cared for and you are comfortable with the place he should be fine.  Like pp said, he could have been anxious from sleeping in a new place.  Now, if you think he isn't liking his stay there at all, I would look into other boarding options.  I would talk to the employees and see how he does while he is there.

  • Hi, I used to run a boarding kennel with my mom. Your dog is probably just very stressed, he will get used to the new environment eventually. They are always very scared when away from home. Your not there and there strangers and strange dogs all around. A good kennel will try and make your dog more comfy, but alot of them don't care much and just let the dogs in and out, feed them and ensure there is a clean environment with water. Its hard on them, even when I leave my own dogs with family they come back tired and stressed.

Does this kennel take your dog for personal walks, some kennels do, it helps ease the stress. We also had a 100x100ft play yard and let the dogs romp around and have fun, makes them feel more at home.

    Yes

Sounds like your dog was stressed and just did not get much sleep. I will never ever board my dogs anywhere that does not have cameras. In all honestly, I will never board my dogs again. We had a horrible experince boarding our 2 dogs for 10 days. It was so horrid I would never suggest it to anyone. It's not what you want to hear, but that was our experince. I would have someone stay at my house and watch the dogs where they are more comfortable.
