Hedgehog

Anyone else have a hedgehog? Anyone have any ideas how to get him to be less scared? We got one that was only a couple months old in september, but had been in a home with big dogs and we're pretty sure was traumatized. Now he still is very very very hestitent to let us come near him, any one have any tricks that might help?

Re: Hedgehog

  • You have a hedgehog as a pet?

I didn't know this was something that surprised people. Hedgehogs are fairly common pets.

OP, the best thing you can do is keep him comfortable. Make sure he has a good place to hide in his cage (an igloo, house, box--something that makes him feel like he's confined) and approach him slowly. Maybe try to give him a treat straight from your hand a few times, and if he doesn't take it from you, put it in front of him and let him realize that you're feeding him tasties. That should make him warm up to you pretty quickly.

It's illegal to keep them as pets in Maine, Arizona, California, Georgia, Hawaii and Pennsylvania.

Wow, I had no idea. Why is it illegal?

  • I didn't know you could have hedgehogs as a pet!

*whispers* I want to see a picture! Hedgehogs are so cute!

Other than that, I am no help. Sorry, OP, I've never known anyone who's had one.:(

  • Our hedgie wont eat treats, we've tried chicken, meal worms, crickets (the three things the vet recommened, but i dont think he has much experience with hedgehogs since theres no exotic animal hospitals around :S) and he runs away from them.

  • African Pygmie hedgehogs can do really well in Arizona and become an invasive species. That's why they are illegal there.

I found that hedgehogs in general are kinda "spookie."

How exactly does your hedghog act?

What I found about them was that they really loved their blankets, and their little igloos..they are kind of private little creatures :)

When you go to pick up even the most well adjusted hedgie, it's pretty common for them to curl up and "hiss" at you (I'm sure you know the sound I'm talking about)...and even kind of do that ::jump:: at you. I always thought it was important to remember where the hedgehog is coming from.

He's tiny, he's a prey animal and here you are invading his space! He's gotta "defend" himself. ;D.

I would say that continuing to make your interactions positive, it takes time--but working with your hedgie to try new experiences (the hegehogs I worked with had the little rodent balls and sometimes got to go exploring, they loved that :)), make the interactions brief--hold him for a few minutes then put him back--don't expect too much out of him, but build over time.

really? I live in PA and I'm pretty sure I know people with Hedgehogs as pets. Is this a new law or something?

  • This is bizarre.  They are wild animals.

lol that you're surprised that I'm surprised by this.

    so weird.

Why would you own an animal that you can't get proper vet care for?

  • My BIL and his fiance had an albino hedgehog. They just try to stay calm around him and make sure he's warm enough.

If they're calm and he's warm he tends to be more active. They said it takes some time though. He's just a little guy, not very old.
