What do you use/recommend and how much do you give?
Our dog Chessie recently started having skin issues (itching and hair loss on her neck area - we already ditched the collar) and since after a couple of vet visits there doesn't appear to be an allergic or medical cause we're working on improving her diet in general. This weekend we're going to make a trip to the pet store to get some salmon oil, and I assume the dose amount for different weights is on the bottle.
We also want to give her vitamin e but I keep hearing conflicting info about how much to give her. Online searches told me 100 iu for small dogs (she is 10 lbs) but our vet said we could give more (200 iu or 400 iu) if we spread out the dosage and gave every two or every four days instead of every day. When I went to the store today I couldn't find a bottle with 100 iu so I bought the 400 iu. I am really worried about making her sick so I wanted to double check to see if you all think that sounds about right. I mostly trust our vet but he did tell us to feed her Science Diet so I want to make extra certain we're doing the right thing for her health.
Re: Dog Vitamins/Suppelements
In addition to the salmon oil, you could try coconut oil.
I would think that 400 IU is more in line with the dosage for a larger dog. If you want to control the dosage better, you could try liquid vitamin E.
Thanks both of you. I'm going to keep looking for the smaller tabs.
LinkBride, where do you buy coconut oil for your dog? I haven't seen any in the local pet stores, and everywhere else I see it (drug store is really the only place) it's intended for human hair care and has added ingredients that I'm not sure are safe for the pup. Maybe I am just looking in the wrong places.
