Behavior

When we have company, Chilly MUST immediately grab a toy & parade it around the house for a while. What does this mean?

Re: Behavior

  • Cal does this all.the.time.  When we walk in the door, first he runs over to it and sees that it's us.  Then he spins around and prances off to find a toy and comes wagging over to us with it...then he usually does some circles around us with it in his mouth.

I see it as a security blanket.  People entering the house is very stressful for Cal, and the toys give him a different focus.

  • Both my dog and my mom's dog do this. For us, it's a redirection of energy. My mom's dog is an 80lb american bull/pit mix with tons of love. She likes to be right up in guests face to give kisses and get pets. So when she gets hyper we started telling her to "get a toy." Now she does it on her own. We think our dog plucked this up from her.

  • I can see this as a redirection type of behavior. Prior to Chilly parading the toy, she would greet the guest & pee with excitement. I guess I'll take this behavior over the other.
