Getting a 2nd Dog

We were sitting around last night and out of nowhere Drew turns to me and says "What do you think about Boston Terriers?" I say that I think they're really cute and would be a great size for a second dog for us. He says that he agrees and that he's been thinking Loki could use a furry friend. He asked me to really think about for 24 hours to see if I'm on board and that if I am, we can start looking for one to adopt.

I'm totally floored. He was hard to convince about getting one dog and now he wants another one? Apparently he's really come around to the idea of being a 2 dog family. I know it's a big commitment, and that our pet realted costs would double. But I think I'm ok with that.

We're travelling a few times between now and April, so I'm thinking that we could really start looking after that. What do you girls think?

  • I think it's a great idea if you can afford the extra time and money that will be required. I don't have a dog so I feel like my opinion doesn't count for much. I do however have 3 cats and 2 of them are best buds and thoroughly enjoy each others company. I say go for it.

  • I've been checking out the humane society's website off and on all day. I've been wanting to for a while, so I think it'll be a go! Wow.

  • We have 2 Boston Terriers and they are great little dogs without being too little.  Pet related costs will double, but we really didn't notice except with their annual vet visit.  We keep them at a healthy weight, feed them quality food and they have barely had any health problems.  They are 7 years old now and still have tons of energy!

The only thing that's more difficult with 2 as opposed to 1 is that it's tough for us to go out with them like to the pet store.  But they love to play together, snuggle together, and just be together so it makes it worth it.  Hope it works out for you :)

  • I love the idea :) Along with checking out the humane society, have you checked to see if there are any Boston Terrier rescues near you? That might be a great option! :)

  • Jerry wants a second dog, a mini Aussie, but I'm not on board yet.  I like our 3 person family and don't think that a 2nd dog will be good for Sadie.  She is very timid and enjoys being the only child.  When we watch another dog that's not one of her "friends" she is very affected by the change in the house.

Although we take her to daycare once a week, I think she likes the "when I'm home it's my space."

Plus, when we got OOT it's much easier to trade off with friends b/c we all only have 1 dog so it's not much to add one more.

ETA: I'm not saying a 2nd dog is bad, and we've weighed the financial aspect of it, but with Sadie's personality, I just don't know if she can handle not being the only dog.  I'm worried enough when there's going to be another human involved.

  • We actually spent some more time talking about it this weekend. We both agree that we want to go the rescue route- since it's something we believe in pretty strongly and there's one that's local to Indiana so we're on  their list of potential adopters now. We're also considering French bulldogs and signed up with them as well. We figure it's something that we can look for a little, but not get too invovled in the hunt until after our travelling for the year is calmed down.

Not going for something immediate also gives us some time to make some small adjustments with Loki- like going out on walks more even though it's cold) that will be good for the second dog when she/he comes along. I'm pretty excited and still checking out local humane societies on a regular basis. :-)

    Thanks, girls!

  • You're planning to TTC soon, right? Just want to throw out there that you might want to factor that in to your decision (pet's demeanor, extra work around the house, etc). And what do you guys do with your Loki when you're away? Do you board or does someone come over? You might want to verify if that person would be okay with watching two?

Not trying to be a nay-sayer! My best friend growing up had a Boston and he was so fun and sweet.

TTC is part of why we're just going to be open and let it happen when it does. The right dog will come along at the right time, even if we don't know when that is. But that's why I'm not really looking to go too intense with the search just yet.

When we're away we take Loki to a kennel near our house. They take really good care of him, so I have no worries about bringing a second dog there. I think, if we want, they'd let the two of them stay together. I'll have to double check though.
