WAHM/SAHM preschool for 2 - 2 1/2 yro?

Did you send your 2-2 1/2 yro to nursery school? I am considering sending DS in September when he'll be almost 2 1/2 for 2 days a week, 3 hours each time.  I take him to Mommy & me activities and he seems well adjusted and social but how do I know if I should send him or just wait until he is 3? We are having baby #2 in June so that will impact his life too...

For some reason I feel like I have to make this decision soon and so much will change between now and September. TIA!

I sent E at 2.5 and I was home. It was a sudden decision to go back to work so I'm thankful I did send him. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to get him in there at all on such short notice. Luckily I had him in there 3 days a week already and was able to just extend the days. But, they couldn't take him five days.

I'm a big believer in the earlier the better with pre-school if it's financially swingable. He's learned SO much about everything. Definitely more, in different ways and different things, including problem-solving with other children his age, than he was learning at home with me.

  • I'm a SAHM and I sent Maya to preschool when she was 2.5.  Zach will be starting school in the fall, when he'll be just a few months shy of 2.5.  We do plenty of Mommy and me classes, but I think there's something about a preschool setting, away from me, that helps their development so much.

  • I'm glad you asked this.  Julia will be 2 in June, so I think September will be a little early, but maybe next January we will.

Do most places require potty training if it's not a daycare?

Half the kids in E's class were just 2 when starting in September and it's done wonders for them being with kids slightly older. My friend's daughter wasn't talking much at all when she started at just 2 and now she's talking up a storm.

In E's school they don't have to be PT'd till the 4's class but I think they still wouldn't turn you away. Some you do, some you don't- it varies WIDELY.

  • Gia will be 2 in August. There is a co-op preschool in our town that has a class for 2.5 year olds. I will send her next year. It's one day a week for 2 hours. I think it will be really good for her. Also, they do not require potty training until 4 at this school.

  • Abby started at 2.5 last year.  She loved it.  I saw a huge growth in her.  In the 2.5-3 year room in her school she didn't need to be potty trained.

  • i started trevor last September when he was 2.5.  we considered waiting but chloe was due in november so i knew he was going to need somewhere to go that was just for him. being in school really helped his acclimation to having a baby and all the changes that comes with that.  it was good for me too, to not have to entertain him all day every day.  it was really good for all of us.

  • we didn't do any preschool. my daughter will be entering K without preschool. I work with her on reading and writing, as well as basic math skills. She's in fun classes, dance currently, and we do lots of play dates.  At 2.5, i definitely would not worry about it at all unless YOU want the time.

Zach will be 2 in June also, but he'll be starting preschool anyway.  I know at his school, they do not have to be potty trained until they're 4 years old.

  • I would like to send my ds 2 morning a week for a few hours, however its so dang expensive in our area =( I don't know if its worth it. I can't believe how many fees there are....registration, fundraising, housekeeping,...and that's on top of tuition at the preschools I looked into.
  • I'm havin trouble finding places that have classes for 2 year olds.  The one place near me is a parent/child class and we already do things like that.
  • I SAH and we started DS last week in preschool (he's 2). We're expecting #2 in a few weeks so we wanted to get him started and adjusted to a new routine. We started him this early bc we want to get him out to socialize bc it's going to be hard for me to get him out in the beginning when the baby is so young. It's been HARD getting him adjusted bc he's so used to being home with me and he HATES when I leave him there, but it's slowly getting better. Eventually (hopefully) he'll love it and not cry when I drop him off! :( I say the sooner you do it, the better, just bc there's an adjustment period! GL!

I wanted to add that at this age (under 2.5), most of the places are more of a daycare then a school. BUT they do story time, arts n crafts, music, gym, and other activities. The place he goes isn't really considered a pre school until he's in the 2.5yr old room. Now his room has 18mo olds-2.5yr olds. And most of the kids are there 3-5 days a week full time. There are only 2 kids there part time, 2 days a week, like DS.

  • All the schools I am visiting do not expect a 2 yro to be potty trained. Some of the church schools I was going to look at only take 3 yro and they must be potty trained.
