So in the past I haven't had a problem finding anyone to come over clean the litter boxes, feed our cats, and spend some time with them (4 cats). Either my parents or one of my friends has always done it for us. However my Little Kitty has diabetes now and this going to be a lot more tricky. I know my cat and how he normally acts and when he's having an off day but someone else might not. I'm not sure my parents will actually be able to just keep him at their house with having 3 cats of their own. He needs to eat at certain times and get his insulin 2 times a day at the same time. I feel like I may never be able to go on vacation again because I worry someone else will not be able to take care of him to the point I feel safe being away from him. How did anyone else with medical issues with their pet find someone to come over twice a day to take care of them? What kind of questions did you ask this person? Any help would be appreciated or I may never go on vacation again. lol thanks
Re: Vacation
I think you have a couple of options. One is asking someone to stay at your house- a friend maybe? Another is having your kitty boarded at a place where they handle this type of situation. The vet my parents take their pets will administer medication at specified times. I bet there is a vet in your area that offers services like this. Perhaps a 24 hour clinic that offers boarding? You could also hire someone to come over 2x/day and teach them how to administer the med. You could ask your vet if there is some safe way to regulate your pet 1x/day instead of 2 which might be more feasible for your parents to handle, since that is what they did in the past.
I think there are a number of options, and my guess is your vet would be able to recommend some caregivers or boarding places for your cat. Good luck!
ETA: I missed the part where you are not sure how to trust someone, like a friend, to know what your pet might need. I think having your friend come over a few times before might make you feel comfortable. Perhaps with time you will become more at ease with the diabetes. Honestly, the best thing is to probably leave your cat at some type of vet facility where professionals are there to monitor.
