Can you give a dog children's tylanol?

My dog has cancer.  She has what is called a nerve sheath tumor.  We have had it removed twice and now it is just a waiting game for it to become to much for her.  Well, last night she took a turn for the worse.  The tumor is on her belly and it is about the size of a cantalope.  She can not lay down comfortably by her self, so I help her.  But I have noticed that she is not sleeping and when I pet her she is shaking.  The look in her eyes is devestating.  She has gone down hill so fast I know this is the end and we are going to have to make the decision very soon to end her pain.  With it being a saturday night, my vet is not open, so I thought I would ask here.  Does any one know if I can giver her children's tylanol?  She seems so uncomfortable and I just want to make her feel a bit better if I can.

This is so hard.  Thanks for any advice.

Re: Can you give a dog children's tylanol?

  • I am so terribly sorry to hear about your dog. I know you want the best for your pet, and hate to see them suffer.

Tylenol is toxic to dogs. I would call an emergency vet for a recommendation for a pain OTC pain reliever.  Aspirin is generally ok for short periods for dogs and might help with the pain.

ETA: Does your vet practice have someone on call?  You could try that number. Also, I think some dogs are not able to handle aspirin, but I dont know much more than that, which is why I would consult with some type of professional over the phone unless someone else here has better insight.

  • Thank you for your response.  I had no idea that it was fatal for dogs!  I will call the emergency vet and see what they say.

Hopefully someone there can give you the ok on aspirin. Again, I am so sorry you are going through this.

  • How sad! I hope you're able to find something to help he pain soon!

Sounds like the PP had some great advice - so I'll just "ditto" what they said and just give my condolences.

  • I'm so, so sorry about your dog.  The PP is right, Tylenol is toxic to dogs.  When Dexter pulled a muscle one time, his vet recommended Ascriptin.  It's a plain aspirin that isn't supposed to upset their stomachs.  If she's on other medications, I would still get the ok from the vet if you can, in case of interaction with other medications.

I'm so sorry about your dog.  :(
