Spaying my senior dog (my baby)

Hey everyone. My 9 y/o dachshund/corgi mix is scheduled to be spayed next week. I am terrified. I know it is the right thing to do, and all our other pets are fixed... It just never got done for her... Many complicated reasons I don't want to go into. Her latest heat sent her into a false pregnancy... What really prompted me to go talk to the vet about this is when brown liquid, not just milky goo was coming out of her nipples.

We talked it out. They drew blood to test for any problems before we do the surgery... I'll know those results Tues. and her spay surgery is scheduled for Thurs... we'll pick her up Fri. afternoon.

Anyway, if anyone is willing to share their similar experiences or tell me it is going to be OK I would greatly appreciate it. I know there is a risk doing anesthesia on an older dog and that is what I am so nervous about. She is like our child and I dont want to lose her! But I also want to do what is best for her health and to have a long as possible life.

Ugh, Thursday-Friday is going to be so hard for us.... assuming her bloodwork comes back OK.

Re: Spaying my senior dog (my baby)

  • Good luck!!  I was a wreck putting my 8 year old lab under for surgery years ago, but it was fine.  :)
  • Thanks MammaMia, those are the kinds of things I need to hear! I keep googling and getting mixed results... "it's not worth the risk"... "it's best for their health"... I'm so scared of the anesthesia.
  • Spay is a common surgery.  As a pet mommy, it is always hard to put a pet under anesthesia, so your anxieties are normal.

You say all your other pets are fixed, so just remember that they are fine!  Recovery will be pretty short, you just have to keep her still until the stitches are out, maybe 7-10 days.  But you can totally baby her!  That made me feel better with my corgi!

True, but they were babies when they were fixed. My worries are b/c of her age :(

I really appreciate your encouragement :)

  • We are getting ready to neutered our 6 year old dog. I know he's not as old as yours but I'm worried about him too. He has a testicle that didn't drop all the way so I was told by previous vets that the surgery would be more difficult (hence why I haven't done it). But when we went to our new vet Friday, she told me that it's "hidden" right where they will need to make an incision anyway so it should be easy. I'm sure both of our babies will be fine Smile Keep us updated!
  • I had my 12-year-old pug spayed about two years ago when she was a spry 10. I had adopted her when she was 8 and the vet recommended against spaying her. WORST advice ever. She got pyometra (infected uterus). I did not realize she was sick until one morning when she was super lethargic and some other grossness followed. The vet put her on IV anti-biotics for a week and then performed the spay a week later. Two very expensive weeks after I took her in to the vet, I got my sweet baby girl back healthy and very happy.

By delaying the spay, I could have killed my dog. It would have been so much better to have her spayed while she was healthy instead of waiting until she had infection coursing through her body. Doing now while it is just a routine thing is the best decision you can make for your dog. You are saving yourself a lot of heartache. If my sick puggy can make it through the spay and be OK, your girl is going to be fine. Good luck to you and your baby!

Thank you so much for your words of encouragement! You sound like a strong lady. I wish the best for your pooch and I will definitely keep y'all updated! Same goes for you!

  • The day (thurs.) is getting closer and closer... I'm so scared! She's never had any kind of surgery all these years... I need to quit googling so much... But it's horrifying to read some of the things that basically say it is not worth the risk!

It will be fine, it will be fine, it will be fine...

My baby is everything to me.
