My french toast sucks.

I made french toast for H & LO for breakfast today and apparently they both thought that it sucked. So, what am I doing wrong? Eggs, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon. What else do I need to add?  H said it was bland.

Re: My french toast sucks.

  • I can't for the life of me figure out how french toast would actually SUCK (I make it with whole wheat bread and it's still decent!), but did you throw in a pinch of salt?  It would help with the bland factor.  And what kind of syrup did you use?

Maybe your husband needs to make you breakfast next time.  ;)

  • I usually had a dash of coffee creamer to mine, whatever flavor I have in the fridge.  It adds an extra punch to the flavor I think.

  • I like to use Challah or French Bread for my French Toast.  I like Martha Stewart's Oven Recipe:

This morning I'm trying the Pioneer Woman's French Toast with Berry Butter.

While I often skip it (because it's healthier to leave it out and my kids don't care much), adding some sugar might help.  I've also found that it tastes best when you have a healthy coating of butter on the skillet/pan (but I skip that, too, and use either cooking spray or I Can't Believe It's Not Butter spray to keep the calorie count down...again, we're not all that discriminating over here).

  • I like to add some orange zest to the mixture.
  • Stale bread

    Eggs

    Splash milk

    Pinch Salt

Cook in butter on a hot skillet. Yummy!

Does your husband smoke? It's not as if French Toast is exactly a medley of flavor--mostly a way to use up ingredients and provide a base for a jam/syrup/eggs/whathaveyou.

  • Add vanilla, sugar, and salt. You don't need a lot of any of those, but they make a big difference.  Fry in butter if you can handle the calories.
  • Try this recipe from Annie's Eats -- it's absolutely delicious:

  • I make it similar to yours but add a little sugar, salt and nutmeg.  Did you soak them long enough?

  • Salt and a little honey to sweeten.  I use Ina Garten's challah french toast recipe with the challah bread (but milk instead of half and half) and it is excellent.
  • One possibility is that the bread did not soak up the egg mixture.  Another possibility is that the bread was so thick that the center of the French toast was mushy rather than custardy rich.

Maybe it was the opposite. I used regular sandwich bread (light wheat), so it was a little dry. Definitely not custardy.

  • I think I may be able to help you here...

Try toasting your bread before dipping it into the mix.

    French toast requires "dry" bread.

One common mistake people make when making french toast is that they soak their bread in the milk and egg "concoction" too much. You have to use dry bread, but because most people use Wonder Bread or other extremely "soft" breads, they need to be hardened first.

In addition to that you can add a dash of cinnamon, sugar, or even salt, then pour some maple syrup on top, and serve with slices of fruit, pear,  strawberry etc.

The type of bread you use matters a lot. If you are going to use Wonder Bread, then yes chances are you are not going to make it. lol. While not impossible to make it with this bread, wonder bread and other soft breads may not produce great results when making a french toast.

All these types of bread are perfect for french toast:

    1. Sourdough

    2. Any bread you "pre-toast" yourself

    3. Chinese bakery loaves of bread. Ask to get it cut thick or uncut.

    4. Panettone (bread with raisin)

    5. Brioche (weaved bread)
