Furminator - worth the $$?

We have a golden/chow pup and I was wondering if the furminator was the way to go for brushes?

Thanks!

Re: Furminator - worth the $$?

  • I didn't like it for my german shepherd/husky mix.  I use a rake instead and it gets out all that fluffy undercoat.

  • Buy it on amazon or ebay for way less money. I think I spent $12-$15, which is the price of many other brushes. It works wonders on one of my goldens and only causes static on the other. They have slightly different coats, so I would have been bummed to have bought it at full price and have it not work for Lauren. I also have an undercoat rake, a pin brush, and a few kong rubber brushes (that's partially because the dogs like to chew one while I brush them), and use them a little on each dog.

  • Thanks so much for the feedback! I've never had a long haired dog before so this is all new to me!  :)
  • I agree with the buy on Amazon recommendation.

We have one for our English Setter-- it works very well, in terms of pulling excess fur.  That said, it's kind of harsh on more delicate parts (ears, tails, short foot hair) so you pretty much have to use it w/ a regular brush, IME.

  • We bought ours news, brand-new, on eBay for less than $15, including shipping. We (me and my dog) both love it! When I get it out, she runs over and lays down in front of me, and it gets tons of dead undercoat off of her (she's an Australian Shepherd mix).
  • I LOVE mine, I use it on my cat too! They are awesome, but I don`t suggest using them on non shedding breeds like poodles.

  • MammaMia you must be in my head! I just logged in to ask basically the same question. My chihuahua/terrier mix (short hair) has been shedding like crazy and we are considering getting a furminator. The cost is holding me back as is my fear that it won't work on her for some reason. She doesn't seem to have much of an undercoat but her top coat constantly has loose hairs and they get everywhere! The pin brush we have doesn't work very well on her.

I just heaitate because she does have sensitive skin and also because she is 11 lbs I'm not sure if we should get the small or toy version. Sorry to hijack the thread but I welcome any input on this also.

  • LsbnLlama, if cost is a factor be sure to look on amazon, they have the older versions for less than $20.  You have to pull the fur off yourself but I think that's worth the extra $$ in savings, especially with such a small pup!

I have toy fox terriers they weigh 4-6lbs each, The have very thin fur, but still shed like crazy. My H used to breed terriers and had a medium sized furminator that I use on my dogs and they are fine:)

  • MY husband bought one. It was used once and never again. Yes it got a ton of hair out but it broke a lot and the cats did not feel as soft. A regular cat comb works just fine and leaves them feeling super soft.
