I know you've done tons of research on this so I thought I would ask you this question.

I did some reading over the weekend about how diet drinks and artificial sweeteners can still impact your weight and health, so I was wondering what you use to sweeten things like coffee and iced tea.  What do you cook with when the recipe calls for sugar?  I've dropped some weight thanks to no more sodas but I still use Equal and Splenda.  I've also taken to getting half sweet/half unsweet iced tea sometimes when I'm out.  I know none is best but I have to have something (especially for coffee).

Re: ***Bobblileigh***

  • At home I use truvia or stevia (liquid) to sweeten in small amounts like coffee, smoothie, ect.  I also sometimes use agave and brown rice syrup if a recipe calls for things like honey, maple syrup or corn syrup since those are lower on the glycemic index.  Sometimes though I just use regular old white or brown sugar, especially in baking, I am okay with the whole everything in moderation and if I bake something that has a ton of sugar I just eat 1 serving and bring the rest to work.  If I am out I will use splenda if I have to.  I have gotten my taste buds used to most things without sugar though.

One of the best things you can do is give up the soda, even diet.  I think as long as you are aware and thinking about the amount of sugar and artificial that you eat and limit it then you are good.  A lot of people think that as long as it has no calories its good for you which isnt the case.

Like, yesterday we went out for lunch and I had plain iced tea but used Equal.  However, I only do that a couple of days a week, but I get half and half every morning at CFA when I stop for a drink and some ice (the CFA near the HS has Sonic ice).  Thanks for the information and tips.

  • Have you tired truvia?  They have it in packets and you could carry those in your purse, that would definitely be better than even the half sweet half unsweet.
  • I haven't tried it yet.  I've asked Bill about it and seemed to think that it might not be that good but I will give it a try at your suggestion.
