Older dog losing bladder control?
My 12 year-old Cairn Terrier has started urinating on the couch, floor and bed. She's been house trained since she was a puppy. It really seems like the issue is lack of control since she runs and hides every time she does it. You can tell she knows that she did something wrong.
Our vet isn't open on Monday, so I'll be calling them tomorrow. Should I be concerned that it's something terrible or is it just a sign of old age. Anyone have experience with this?
TIA

I used to be kris216.
I'd definitely take her to the vet, but I wouldn't get too worried yet. A UTI is a definite possibility, and that's cleared up by antibiotics. Hormonal incontinence could also be an issue. If she doesn't have a UTI and it happens when she's either really relaxed or really excited and/or she seems surprised that she's done it, then that might be what's going on. If it's hormonal, she can go on a daily estrogen pill that will tone up the muscles that control urination.
P.S. - I have an 11-year old cairn! They sure have a lot of spirit for senior dogs, don't they!

The only time our dog has ever peed inside when when he had a UTI. It could definitely be something like that for your pup, so it's good that you're going to get her checked out.
If it is something related to age, there is a miracle drug called Proin that has worked for several of us on the Pets board (or rather...for our dogs). I had a foster who was left incontinent after several antibiotic-resistant UTIs, and Proin kept her completely dry. She would wet the bed...like pee in her sleep. And Proin prevented that from happening. She never had an accident when she was on it.
