Herding/working dog people

We are taking Cal to his first ever herding class.  Not because we plan to get sheep in our urban backyard...but just because we think he'd like it.  And, full disclosure, because we are really interested in seeing how he does.

Anyone have any advice?  Cal is 6, and hasn't done any herding since we adopted him 4 years ago.  He came from a rural NorCal shelter, in an area where he was found as a stray.  It's likely he was bred to be a herding dog (he's a Kelpie), but whether he ever did any herding is unknown.

We want to make this as good an experience for him as possible, so any advice you guys have is appreciated!

  • Can you take a video clip? Sounds like so much fun and I'd love to see Cal in action! I hope and bet he enjoys it!

  • I don't have any advice, but that sounds like so much fun! I've been trying to find a place to get Booker instinct-tested, just to see if he has any aptitude for it.
  • I took Buddy this summer to get his instincts tested  which basically throws them in a pin with sheep and sees what happens (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbaPnuOuFkY) and he just naturally knew what to do.  He was supposed to get into actual classes to fine tune his ability but we got poor sadly lol.  If he shows interest I think Cal will instantly love it.  I do need pictures/video because Cal is one of my board favorites.

  • No advice on herding, but ditto on the video! I'd love to see Cal in action.

Have you ever looked into Treiball? I haven't done it, but the training school we're going to start going to next month is trying to get a class going sometime soon. I understand it was invented for herding dogs that don't have access to stock, but any dog can be taught to do it.

This is where we found the guy we're going to.  Most of the websites linked here are out of date or extinct, but the e-mails seem to be working.

I am so excited about it. Cal is SUCH a typical Kelpie, and I can't wait to see how he herds.  I hope he enjoys it.  He's such a hard worker that I think it'll be awesome for him.

Here's a working Kelpie in action:

  • I don't have any advice, but I love watching our dog. He isn't trained yet, but he loves to go in with the cows and would move them all day if we would let him.

  • Have fun!  Let us know how it goes.  One of the kees club's has had herding testing.  Several of the kees passed the instinct test and one now has her title.

Video of herding test.  There are more on youtube.

  • We did this with one of our Aussies about a year ago. We had him for probably 5 years before ever taking him to herding class. He absolutely loved it, and got really good at it. I don't really have any advice, just go and have fun. I guarantee your dog will love it. GOod LUck!
