Lurker question re: vacations
Good morning ladies!
I'm mainly a lurker here. DH and I just adopted our first dog from our local dog warden over the weekend and we were talking about what we'll do when vacation comes around. We don't have one scheduled for a while now but he suggested I poll the Nesties and see what most people do. Do you take your dogs on vacation with you? board them? do they stay with a family member?
Re: Lurker question re: vacations
Our dogs (and cat) stay with MIL.
Depending on the vacation, we might take them with us (just the dogs). But, probably not.
Boarding is a good option if there isn't family to take care of the pets.
We have taken her with us for long weekend trips and hope to take her on our first week long beach trip this summer.
If she couldn't go with us, she'd stay with my parents.
We live 6 hours from our families.
Most of the traveling we do is to go visit our families, and the dogs come with us.
If we are flying somewhere, we leave the dogs with our neighbor, who is like the neighborhood pet sitter. She also feeds our cats twice a day while we're away.
If we had family here, we would definitely leave the dogs with them.
We have friends who just leave their dogs at home and someone checks in on them a few times a day. I'm not saying that's a terrible thing, but I just feel like dogs need more interaction than that (especially my insane dog).

Fortunately are dogs are awesome in the car, so they come with us to the lake and to visit family.
If we are going somewhere they can't come, we have an amazing dog sitter who stays with them. She is a a life saver!!
and thank you for rescuing!!!
When we are traveling overseas or anywhere that the dogs cannot go we hire a dog sitter to stay at our house. We ask that they live their typical life (work, friends, movies whatever) but don't leave our dogs unattended longer than 9 hours at a time, or a typical work shift.
We pay them a daily rate, plus stock the fridge with food of their liking, beer and give permission to rent movies on demand. We also bonus if they do extras while we are gone, clean the house or pick up the yard. Those kinds of things.
So far we have only used very trusted family or friends. And I leave a borderline anally retentive letter with instructions.
