I need some help finding ways to incorporate dahlias into a mixed border. I love, love, love the flowers, but the foliage...meh. There's just not much to it and it looks so raggedly by the time the blooms are really going. Most of the pictures I see use dahlias in cut-flower beds, and I just don't think it works well in a landscape. I have some thoughts, but I'm having a hard time forming a picture of how I want it to look.
Anyone come across any pictures that you think use dahlias effectively? I'd love the help.

Re: inspiration help?
Our little Irish rose came to us on March 5, 2010

Yes. I'm just finding pictures of dahlias themselves.... and dahlias on clothing and jewelry. (Seriously, they need a better way to refine searches.)
I was hoping someone had a few pictures tucked away or was bored and wanted to waste time looking for pretty pictures for me

Here's what I'm working with:
(arrows are a short split rail fence)
Having the dahlias in a big chunk, just hanging out there doesn't look good. I'm totally stuck on how to knit them in. As you can probably tell, I love a bit of color.
I'm hoping to get the "weed" and "dahlia" chunks more integrated without losing all cohesion.
ETA: I'd get rid of the ugly maple, but Mr M has grown attached.
ETAA: I mean to get rid of the weeds, I don't think that was clear.

Some Dahlias have better foliage than others. I try to grow some with darker foliage for a little contrast like 'Sayonara'
I also tend to mix them in my beds with annuals so it is not a wall of green until July- I can't find any great pictures but here is one I took of my garden in September so a little passed it's prime.
Thanks! I might play around with some annuals this year and see what I like. From what you posted and the few photos I've found, it seems like a good idea to let the dahlias be the tallest and get some medium/low height plants to gather around them.
I've got Sayonara on my list, but I don't know how much room I'lll have. If they all come back this year I've got:
Myrtle's Folly
Vassio Meggos
Ginger Willo
Binky
Grande Finale
