Having a hard time installing carseat

We actually don't plan on turning J yet but when I tried to turn the seat FF for practice today (and because she's been acting completely nuts in get carseat so u wanted to give FF a whirl) and it just won't fit. I have an Evenflo Symphony. I put it in the first position, pulled the latches as far as they would go and was only able to get one side to click. The other side won't reach. I made sure they were pulled all the way and everything. I don't want to use the seat belt method because it makes me nervous, I prefer the latch system. Is that just not possible to do? Do all FF convertible seats use the belt rather than latch?

Re: Having a hard time installing carseat

  • Did you reroute the LATCH belt through the forward facing belt path instead of the rear facing belt path?

Also, just an FYI, seatbelt installation is as safe as LATCH. LATCH was designed to make installing easier, but sometimes seatbelt is a lot easier.

  • when all else fails...bring it in to the station and let someone else do it...they do a great job and make sure it's in right.

I agree. Heck, I have a 4+ year old and I still have no idea how to install a car seat. I've never done it myself.

  • Just watched the you tube video.....you were right, I have to put the belt through a different opening. Yay! Thanks! I was worried I just didn't have the strength to pull it correctly and was worried i'd have to buy a new one.

Glad you figured it out! It may be helpful to meet with a tech to make sure you're doing it right. A good tech will not install it for you, though. They'll teach you how to do it yourself and what to look for so if you ever need to move it unexpectedly you know how.

  • We move ours frequently when J goes to her grandparents so they can drive their own cars. I don't like being trapped with one particular car so I definitely need to learn!

This is what I was going to say.

I've installed three different seats FF in 3 different cars and there is so much extra room that I can't imagine it not being right.

Also which seat are you trying it in? If its the center seat check your manual. My car doesn't have latch in the middle. But you could accidentally be trying to install with the Latch for the side sides which would be too wide a spread.

When in doubt get it inspected but I disagree with just having someone install it for you. I had them teach me the inspection process and watch me install it. Then if I put the seats in my ILs car or in someone else's in an emergency, I know I did it right.
