I've accepted a new job and will be WAH full-time. I'm excited for the flexibility and hopeful that being home will allow me to get things like laundry, dinner prep and some exercise in during the day. But I'm also nervous about not having human interaction except for IM, email and phone during the day. And not leaving the house except to pick Katie up from daycare.
What do you like about WAH? What do you dislike? Any tips for me?
Thanks!
Re: Anyone WAH?
The last 6 months I worked, before Alana was born, I did probably 90% from home. I completely and totally loved it! I was on conference calls a good part of many of my days and loved that, when I got off, I could actually work without anyone finding me, bothering me, and asking me to do something else. And, it made it so easy to schedule deliveries, repair people, etc....
I do know that some people really don't like it and miss the office interactions, but, I was totally fine with it!
Not a newbie, but, had to create a new account - formerly LBR_NJ

In my old job I did. For a time period it was 5 days a week. I didn't like it. I missed people and I'm far from a people person. It ended up evolving into 2-3 days from home & the rest in the office which I liked a lot more. I HAD to get out of the house. I would often run out at lunch time just to get out.
Once in a while I could do a thing or two around the house, but I wouldn't count on it. I worked longer hours from home and was tied to my laptop and phone at my dining room table. It's not as easy as people think.
Congrats on your new job!!!
I did it for 8 years. Granted, I was also traveling a lot of the time so I wasn't in a home office 5 days a week, but when I was I loved it-- for all the reasons that Lisa described above. Also, my corp offices were in California, so I had the early morning (until about 11 EST) to get things done on my time. Conversely, I also worked many nights until about 8 or 9pm EST because the offices on the west coast were still open.
I loved the flexibilty and being that it was sales, I did get the human interaction during my sales calls. It became too much when Toby was born and I wouldn't seem him for weeks at a time.
You do need to be disciplined, otherwise the entire day will be shot and you'll have gotten nothing done on the work front, but your house will be sparkling! Also, you can end up working hours upon hours with no rest. You need to be able to shut your door on work, too. Best thing that worked for ME was to set up a schedule. I'm not sure of the kind of work you're doing, but we can talk about it tonight.
I'm excited for you though! Sounds like a great move and will make you MUCH, much happier! Good luck!
Amazing low-cost commute
It has its good points and its bad. I love it because I'm minutes from Kourtney! I gained hours in my day not commuting.
Its true about not much interaction, but I do go into my office once in a while. I'm on the phone a bit due to conference calls - but honestly, most of the people I work directly with AREN'T in my office - so its not like I'd see them even if I worked in the office every day.
One down side - sometimes it its hard to "step away" from the computer if I know someone is waiting for something, or its a project that I need to get done. So, even at 5 p.m. (or 9 p.m.), or a Saturday, or 11 p.m., I might still be working.
What kind of work will you be doing? (You don't have to answer if you're uncomfortable, obviously!)
I know I can't count on being able to do things during the day, but I just knowing I could if I had some down time will be nice.
I also know from talking with my boss and his boss during the interview process that it's ALL about discipline and keeping to a schedule. I plan to continue with the same schedule I have now except I won't be getting in the car to commute. I know if I don't shower, eat at the normal times, etc. the whole day will devolve and I don't want that to happen.
I did for about 5 years. loved it. I don't think I could work any other way now. i was out of the house on calls/meetings etc, so I did not lack for human interaction.
I would recommend getting dressed in real clothes every morning and scheduling your day. the challenge of working at home is a lack of built in structure.
I do it on occasion but I turned down the full time WAH position because of money and I regret it a lot.
One of my good friends WAH 100% of the time. She just makes lunch plans with friends often to get some personal interaction. You still get a lunch break.
Also had I taken the WAH position I'd not be as pressed for time and would therefore be able to join the parent org at school, etc to meet more people.
I would not count on getting stuff down around the house but when I work from home I do throw a load of laundry in before starting my day, move it to the washer when I make lunch and move it to the dryer before I get the kids. I also am able to pop a dinner that was prepared in advance in the oven in the same time I'd take a bathroom break, etc.
I work from home a day or two days a week. I like it because my morning isn't as rushed getting the kids ready, etc. I can shower whenever I want and stay in my sweats. I can get a load of laundry in and get dinner started on most days-- depends on how busy I am. We're in and out of the office most days, so even when I am in the office there's a good chance I will be here by myself.
Overall, it's good for me. I know some people have a harder time staying motivated at home. It's easy to sink into other stuff like TV, chores, etc. You have to make sure you're focused.
But, if I have an errand to run, I do it and count it as my lunch or I work a little later. It gives me more flexibility on my time.
Congrats and best wishes on the new job!
i did it for two weeks before returning to the office but i had cole home. that made it tough. but i LOVED it. and i was much more focused at home than here. i do a lot less nest surfing when im at home lol. but it does take discipline. i liked working in my pj's.
if i could do it even ONCE a week i'd do it in a heartbeat. especially if you don't have to clock hours 9-5 persay and can have some flexibility. i did a lot of my work after the kids went to bed
i wish my job and my company where more able to do work from home. probally about 50% of my work could be done at home
I did with some frequency at my last job and as you know I'll be doing it 3 days/week wheni start my new job next week. You just have to stay focused and set up a space that will be your office. And, make a point of bei g seen and heard from. I like doing it because I am able to start dinner or do a load of laundry, and I can get the kid at a normal time. I actually feel liked get more done at the house, andi think it's largely because I do still keep a routine - days I WAH I get up at the same time and shower as if i was going in, get RP to school at the same time, etc. it's just nice to be able to do work from the comfort of my home instead of in an office where I'm getting nterrupted every 10 minutes!
Sadly I'm nowhere near there...I live down in Bucks County, PA.
I've done it full time, and right now I do it part time. I really like it.
But, it definitely isn't for everyone, and it takes a LOT of discipline...which I know you have
