XP: Riviera Maya

I am starting to plan our 5 year anniversary trip to the Riviera Maya in November. Who has been? Where did you stay? What did you do? This is our first time going anywhere together and we are so excited! Not excited for that passport thing, but very excited!

Re: XP: Riviera Maya

  • Love the Riviera Maya.

We went for our Honeymoon in 2009 and stayed at both Excellence Riviera for 4 nights and Secrets Silversands for 3 nights. We really enjoyed both resorts and would go back to either one anyday.

I do remember liking the food at Excellence a bit more, but they were both very good. Both resorts have a lot of variety, so you never really have to eat at the same restaurant twice. I remember the nightlife at Secrets was tons more fun and lively.

When we were at Secrets we took a day trip into Cozumel with another couple and rode scooters around the island. Wherever you stay, you must do this! It was beautiful and quite memorable. Good luck planning your trip!

  • We went in May 2009 which was the very begining of swine flu hysteria but by that point, it was paid for so we went!  We stayed at the Barcelo Maya which was great.  There are several different hotels on the property (differing price levels) but the part we were supposed to stay in was closed because of the sudden drastic drop in tourism so we got upgraded.  The room itself wasn't anything special but it was clean.  It's an all inclusive resort so we ate all meals there.  The buffet was really good.  It got a little old after 5 days but there was still a good variety.  We also got three "special" dinners at the nice restaurants which were all excellent.  We booked through Apple vacations and the price was very reasonable.  We only left the resort one day to go to Tulum and Xel-ha.  Xel-ha was very cool and I highly recommend it.  Tulum was ok if you're into Mayan ruins but it was hot and I was 11 weeks pg so I kind of hated it.  I would have rather spent the whole day at Xel-ha.

My dad has gone twice and stayed at Barcelo once and somewhere else (can't remember now) the second time.  He said he wishes he had gone back to Barcelo because it was much nicer than where he went the second time.

  • We also went for HM and stayed at Excellence.  We loved the resort, the food, and the AI experience.  We had some amazing day trips to go ziplining through the jungle and swimming in a cenote, to Xcaret, and to the ruins at Chichen Itza.  All our trips were really memorable and I am so glad we did them.  We also spent a lot of time swimming and relaxing in our gorgeous room.
  • We went about 10 years ago and stayed at Barcelo Maya and had a fabulous time.  we didn't do any excursions other than diving.  it's been so long no idea what the food was like - and pretty sure (or hope) that it would be a bit different by now...

  • We went for our HM in '08 & stayed at the Ocean Maya. The hotel was all inclusive but wasn't very nice. Our room flooded 2 nights because of rain, the food wasn't very good, and there wasn't much to do to after dinner. I ended up with the flu and was sick all but the day we got there and the day we left so I pretty much slept the whole time we were there. We went to Chichen Itza which seemed really cool but I was just starting to get really sick and was miserable. We also went swimming in a cenote which was very fun. I heard really good things about the zip lines out there from other people at our resort and wish we could have done them. I also heard great things about Xel-Ha, it looked really fun.

  • We HMed in Cozumel with Iberostar  but went across to RM for a full day.  We spent the day at the Iberostar Tucan and it was absolutely stunning.   I want to go back there with N in the next year.
  • We've stayed at Iberostar twice and loved it both times... They have like 6 hotels somewhat connected, each a different "level". You get access to all the other hotels and their food/amenities that are below the one you stay at.

DH and I went once alone to the 2nd highest... The Maya.... Then with a ton of family to the 4th highest- the Lindo. The only difference (besides a lot of $$$) was the food was better at the more expensive one and the beach chair were better.

  • I've heard great things about the Iberostar hotels.  We stayed in a private place just south of the Playa del Carmen.  It was fine but I'm guessing the all-inclusives are better.

I was wondering if they were connected some how. That makes a lot of since. I am going to look into them more for sure.

Thank you everyone for the imput! Sooo many choices!

  • Ugh - the nest just ate my looooong response. Take two!

I can't remember the name of the place we stayed. It was fine - clean, updated room, decent food. But it was HUGE. I hated being a 15 minute walk to the beach, hated having to wait for golf carts (and I was 6 weeks pregnant, so walking a ton wasn't happening), hated how far apart everything was. I much, much prefer a smaller resort. I don't care about having 15 restaurants, I'm good with 3 or 4. I want to feel like I'm at the beach, not just close to it, you know?

We haven't been there, but for smaller resorts I've heard Akumal Beach Resort is wonderful. When we're finally able to take a vacation again, I think it's where we will head.

  • Another one on the Barcelo boat.  There is basically 3 sections to this resort.  Stay at the Palace portion, it's the nicest of the 3.

  • I've only been once so I can only recommend you don't go to the Grand Mayan.  In 2008 room service gave both DH and I the worst food poisoning we've ever had.  we spent 3 days in the room sick.
