Do you write letters?

My grandma doesn't understand the internet and she's a bit hard of hearing so the only way I can communicate with her these days is via snail mail. I've been writing to her since I originally moved abroad.  I enjoy it.  She's my pen pal.  I tell her what's going on in my life and she keeps me apprised of all the latest gossip at her assisted living facility.

I just finished up a letter to her and am waiting for some pictures I'm having printed to be delivered (again, because she doesn't use the internet she won't be able to see them otherwise) to send it off.  It's got me wondering if I'm the only person who still does this.

Re: Do you write letters?

  • Yes.

I write to my grandfather, though I do not get responses from him.  I write to my grandmother.

I also write to a same-age friend who does not trust the internet.  I love to write letters and take every opportunity I can to do so.  Email is quick and easy, but there is something very special about letters.

And, just to add to the experience, I use a fountain pen, that I fill with ink before each letter -- I have purple, emerald green, and Caribbean blue inks.  I have some gold ink too, but I don't like how it looks on my stationery.

I don't mind being held to a higher standard; I mind being held to a lower one. (Sam Seaborn, The West Wing)

  • I agree with dorothy that there is something special about letters, but I don't have anyone to write to since all of my friends and relatives use the internet. When I first moved to Germany my now deceased grandmother was 88. She actually got a computer and learned how to use email (and play Solitaire) so she could communicate with me that way.

  • I should. I voted never. When we first moved here I would send a postcard to the elderly family members and little kids. I haven't done this almost two years. Bah, I need to do it!

  • I do once in a grand while to my grandmother.  She loves receiving it (my mom reads it to her as she's basically blind).

  • Never. My grandparents bought a computer and learned how to use the internet, so they communicate with us that way. All of my family is on facebook, so that's how I keep everyone updated.

Sometimes I write out a nice little letter and stick it in a holiday card with a couple of photos, but that's rare.

  • My dad is not a big talker and works long, odd hours, so we used to communicate through letters every since I went off to college. I've always really enjoyed it.

Unfortunately, since mail delivery is not reliable here in SA (things go "missing"), not to mention the time delay, we've started emails this past year or so. My dad doesn't like it as much, but I told him I still save all the emails. I think that made him feel better.

  • I used to send letters to my Grandma all the time when she was aline. Now I send letters with M's drawings once in awhile to H's Grandmother, she loves to receive them and know that we are thinking of her.
  • I voted never, but I do write Thank You notes. Does that count?

  • I write Thank You notes.

  • Cards/postcards to Mom.  Which reminds me... I should get on V-Day.

  • Never, everyone I communicate with far away uses the internet. My grandmother is the only person I know without a computer and I do not speak to her anymore.

I would love to receive and write letters though.

  • I only write thank yous. I send thank yous for every gift Genna gets, because not many people bother to send us anything, and I want them to know I really do appreciate it - and I think a handwritten card is the way to do that.

I haven't written a letter in a long time though - both my Grandmas are on email - so thats nice & easy :)

  • DH and I use to write letter to each other when we were long distance.

I wrote out Christmas and Birthday cards. Occasionally I send thinking of you cards. My little neighbor girl wrote to me a few times when I was in Zurich so I wrote her back each time.

I've been sending postcards to my 2 year old niece because she loves to get mail.  My SIL said they've gotten her a map and every time she gets one they show her where in the world it came from.  I was Skyping with the niece the other day and she showed me her map and proceeded to point out every country by name from which I'd sent her a post card.

  • I used to write letters with both of my grandmas, but sadly they have both passed away.

I send postcards frequently to immediate family members and also to my Great Grandma and Grandpa, but it's not the same. One of my grandmas would write her letters with random play-by-play moments, 'Hang on, need to go get the mail....Okay I'm back. It's so nice outside today!' I loved it because it was as if the letter were a real conversation.
