Poo & Pee everywhere! (cat related)

I have a smelly problem. (all cats here)

Violet, my own cat, has been peeing in the living room for the past two months.  I've been finding poop there, too.  At first I thought it was my dog Milo.. until I made him sleep in the crate one night and, voila! There was poo on the floor in the morning.  This is how I knew it was Violet.

Fast forward a month.  Violet has been to the vet and he gave her an antibiotic shot.  No peeing/pooing for ~ 1 month.  Well now it has started again.  I actually caught her peeing on the floor the other day.  The whole area smells like cat pee.. arguably the worst smell ever.  I've steam cleaned, put a litterbox in the room, taken her to the vet, made double sure to clean the litterboxes daily.  I'm not sure what else to do.  The vet said she's healthy.  She is just messing everywhere.  Violet is my rescue with behavioral problems.  The urinating is nothing new, but the frequency is. The poo'ing all over the house is also new.    Any other suggestions on how to get this under control?

Also, (totally irrelevant) my new fosters came in last week with some fancy feast food.  I've been told this is one of the worst cat foods ever, so I've been transitioning them to Natural Choice.  They're only eating the fancy feast.  I scooped the litterbox this morning and their poo looked like an orange and red rainbow. Lol... I need to get them some better food.

EDIT: I feel I should mention that this behavior began before I brought the fosters into the house, in case anyone focuses in on that.

Re: Poo & Pee everywhere! (cat related)

  • How old is Violet?

I would re-train on the litter box. Put her in a bathroom with just the litter box and water (and of course food at her meal times). Dont leave any bathmats on the floor. She will probably use the box.

Add Cat Attract to the box (either the actual litter or the additive).

Try a Feliway diffuser or spray. The diffuser takes a while to take effect but they are awesome.

Oh and use an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle to clean up all pee/poop spots. Get a blacklight if you have to so you can see all of the old spots on the floor. Even steam cleaning doesnt break down the enzymes and so your cat can still smell where she went.

ETA: This advice is only useful if you have had a medical workup and the vet says it is not a medical issue. Just throwing that out there for any lurkers with the same problem. I know you said you already got her checked out, so this is what I would try next.

  • Thank you!  I haven't used an enzymatic cleaner.  I'll try that, then steam clean again.  I'll try the litterbox in the bathroom bit this weekend.  Thanks so much for the additional tips!

EDIT: Violet is estimated to be 4-5 years old.

  • 100% ditto PP on using an enzymatic cleaner (Nature's Miracle or Got Pee, for example) on all potty spots and adding Cat Attract.

Scamp started pooping outside the box when we brought Zoey home. It took me 2 months to finally try the Cat Attract, and it literally worked overnight. No more poop outside the box (unless some moron, who will remain nameless but whose name happens to rhyme with tramp, hangs her butt too close to the edge of the box, :P). I add the Cat Attract litter in a layer over top of my normal litter so that I don't have to use so much of it at once. Works like a charm.

I was asking about her age to get a feel for whether she has ever been good about using her litter box or if she might have some old-age type problems. If re-training her is a pain (like she will just meow all day or you only have one bathroom, ect) then try the Cat Attract first. For many cats, it works like a charm! Good luck!

  • I would definitely recommend Cat Attract Litter, cleaning thoroughly with Nature's Miracle (we'll soak spots with it, and then mix it into our steam cleaner, also.

Feliway and calming collars have dramatically improved the quality of life for one of our cats. Keep in mind, that Feliway can take a month or more to kick in.
