I have this odd cabinet in my kitchen that had a hole in it (the previous owners had the ugliest piece of glass in the world in it, and I took it out and broke it maliciously), and DH came up with the idea to put metal in there for a place to hang up recipes while I'm cooking. I covered the metal in burlap (for now, until I decide if I'm going to paint it or what, and I haven't even come up with permanent window treatments for in there yet either) and I now need some cuter magnets than the beer bottle cap ones I made in college. :P Here's a quick cell phone pic.
So...what can I glue to a magnet that would be cute? I have sort of a vintage feel going on in there with the blue Ball jars and such, if that helps any. Light yellow walls, red Kitchenaid/other small appliances, black/SS large appliances.
Re: DIY magnets?
shrinky dinks.
they'd not only be completely personalized, but you'd get to do a quick project on a dreary day w/ your DD.
I believe I have winner winner chicken dinner:
fabric covered buttons. Take the shanks out before you make them and glue in strong magnets. Can personalize to your heart's desire!

Great ideas posted already! Not sure if these match your style, but they were super cheap to make.DH even helped. http://bornambitous-bornimaginative.blogspot.com/2011/03/refrigerator-magnets.html
I was going to say buttons too. But I like the shrinky dinks idea also. I bet you could find some cute vintagey (is that even a word!) images to use.

You could actually glue anything into magnets. I made a bunch of hair flowers for christmas and for my relatives that I knew would never wear them, I turned them into magnets. Easy and cheap to make. Found the tutorial here...

You could choose the colors and use whatever you like for the middle. I love the buttons she used but I just used whatever buttons I had handy or the beads from a bracelet I wore for halloween... These are the first few I made with random buttons... they got cuter, i promise... It's just a PITA to take and load pix with my camera
