I posted this on MM, but wanted to ask here too:
For my 30th birthday, DH and I and two friends rented a Deep Creek Lake cabin. Friends received confirmation from their workplaces that the dates they requested were fine.
I got a very distraught email today from my friend that her company (Fortune 500 company) that they are implementing a vacation blackout during the time she requested (and received confirmation) off, and was also told she'd have to travel that week across country. I checked the rental policy, and it states that if the cabin can't be rented out by others, then we're out the money.
She checked her work vacation policy, and there is nothing in it about vacation blackouts and what they mean for people that have already booked trips. If that's the case, shouldn't her workplace pay for the rental fee, should the place not be able to be rebooked?
So frustrated and upset right now. We have been looking forward to this for months and this came out of nowhere.
Re: Vacation rental - help!
How far in advance is this trip?
I don't think they are obligated to pay for her rental. In fact, unfortunately, I don't know if they are obligated to let her still go on the vacation eventhough it was approved. She could try talking to HR, but it might depend on whether her HR department is pro-eomployee or pro-employer. It's a crappy situation, but I think she has very little recourse
