Does anyone live in Barnegat?

We looked at new construction and really loved how much you get for your money.  Biggest concern is really my commute to East Brunswick.  My husband works construction and has no problem driving to Weehawken from there at all as he leaves at 5 am.

The taxes seem a little high also and then there is the Nuclear Power plant.  Not sure if that should be a major concern or not as most of NJ is within a 50 mile radius of one plant or another.  Especially in Ocean County

Re: Does anyone live in Barnegat?

  • I grew up in Waretown and can see the plant from my bedroom window.  That commute would be tough.  I wouldn't really be concerned about the plant--my kids didn't come out with Simpsons fish eyes, though I sort of expected them to!

  • Yeah the entire state is polluted in one way or another.  The commute for me woul hopefully be temporary until I could either work from home or find something else.
  • I grew up in Forked River (in the last development before Waretown) and I could also see the power plant from our front windows too.  We never worried about Oyster Creek as a "threat", except on 9/11 when things were very uncertain (my mom left to to go my sister's).

As far as commute goes, I did FR to Sayreville for a year.  It took me 50 minutes  for the 50 mile commute.  There were times where things would be a dead stop on the Parkway, so that posed some problems that way.  Additionally, the commute home, if you dont' leave before 4, it will take you a significant amount of time to get home.  I was a teacher, so I aimed to leave before then and was able to.  Summer Thursdays and Fridays were tough too.

If you want my opinion - I think you'll regret the choice or change jobs within a year.  The commute is long and hard, especially at night.  What about Northern Ocean/Southern Monmouth County?  Manalapan, Jackson, Howell, Freehold?

Maybe this is why I'm so tall?!  We must have grown up a 1/2 mile from each other by way of the seagull!  My parents house is right on the water across from the wetlands that belonged to plant.  It was the next inlet north of Oyster Creek via boat.

And why I'm so short!?!?  Probably.  My parents are a lagoon from the bay in Pebble Beach... Barnegat is right on the other side of how we get to the bay.  We'll have to get together sometime when we're both at our parents'!  And bring Jezebel too!

  • I live in Howell now.  We moved there in 2000 and I commuted to East Hanover for 4 years before finding my job I have now.  We bought new then and would like new construction again but the prices in Howell are a little high.   I don't like my job and was planning on a change eventually anyway.

We haven't completely ruled out Freehold/Howell existing properties that need work

  • I'm in Forked River too, as Feisty and Trish know. I am a SAHM but my husband commutes an hour west to Robbinsville everyday, which he hates. I wasn't crazy about the area when we first moved here but it's grown on me. I like that's everything isn't so.damn.crowded.  The downside is that there isn't as many places to shop, but it's developing pretty quickly.

Feisty: I thought the EXACT same thing about the 3 eyed Simpson fish when we were looking down here! Lol I still cringe when I see people fishing on that bridge :P

  • That would be fun!  to all get together down there.

Jess - You can't even imagine what it was like when we first moved there in the early 90's.  There was nothing!!  Everything was in TR, there wasn't even that much shopping in Manahawkin.  It's remarkable how much has changed since then.

Yeah a lot of my aunts and uncles have lived down here for a while. I always thought it was so odd that there was nothing down here..

Now we have WALMART!!! Wahooooo!!! Lol

Now if we could just get a Target I'd be a happy girl! :)

  • I cant imagine going through the Toms River tolls every days in the summer......no new house would be worth putting my husband through that

  • I work in Barnegat and live south of there. If you would like to PM me about Barnegat I can answer your questions. I would hate to deal with the traffic in the summer though.

My husband has no issues with it at all, he's all for it.  He's driven from Howell to Mahwah for a long term job, Howell to Randolph etc.   Which is longer then Barnegat to the Jersey City/Weehawken area he's working at now.  Commute doesn't bother him 1 bit .   I'm the one who doesn't want a long commute again

Thanks.  We are probably going to take a 2nd look this weekend on our way back home from AC.    The Single Family homes are Walters Home Builders Ocean Acres and Ryan Homes  Gunning Hill Estates.
