Pompeii

Has anyone been?  Is it worth it?  Should we stay in the area or just shuttle back and forth from the Rome area?

TIA!

Re: Pompeii

  • We took a day trip from Rome via train and it was fine.  I thought it was definitely worth it.
  • It is totally worth it, we just did a day trip from Rome and that allowed enough time to see what we wanted to.

  • It's about a three hour train ride from Rome. I'd recommend staying in Sorento (incredibly gorgeous resort town) or Naples (crime-ridden metropolis).

Pompeii so SO worth it. You will literally feel like you have stepped back in time 2000 years. It is so surreal to walk around a pristine, ancient city!

  • defintiely worth it

  • We just went to Pompeii in October and loved it, although I don't think I'd recommend doing it as a daytrip from Rome.  I know lots of people do, but I'd highly recommend staying in Sorrento instead (such a beautiful place).

  • We did a day trip from Rome in July 2010.  We bought train tickets Naples the day before at the train station automated machines.  We left very early (maybe 8am), connected in Naples to the regional train, had lunch at the small place outside the entrance, spent the day inside (get the audio guides).  We could have spent longer, but some in our group weren't as interested.  We finished around 4 and decided to catch the train home instead of trying to fit in a trip up the volcano.  We got back early to Naples, so we changed our tickets and arrived back in Rome an hour earlier than planned.  It was still a long day, but awesome.  If you want to go up the volcano, spend less time at lunch, know the train schedules so you don't miss the last train back, and know the volcano bus schedules so you're not sitting around and waiting for the bus.

As for staying nearby... to me it would depend on your tolerance for changing hotels.  If you're already changing a bunch, just do a day trip.

  • I loved Pompeii but I stayed in Naples that night. I actually was in Sorrento for two nights, Naples for a night and then we took a train to Rome the next morning. I would think doing it as a day trip from Rome would be an overwhelming day - the train stations are pretty chaotic and it's a long journey. I ended up wandering around Pompeii for several hours (it's huge!) and I wouldn't have wanted to rush through it.

  • We did it as a day trip from Rome and spent 4-5 hours at Pompeii. I could have done an entire day there. I find train rides interesting and there are cool things to see, so I didn't mind the longer train times.

I have also been to Sorrento but...it just didn't blow me away. It was okay. Nice views, absolutely, and a cool hike to Sagata, but people talk about it like it's the coolest place ever and, for me, it just wasn't.

Still, it's more convenient for Pompeii.

  • Ditto pps - it's definitely worth seeing and would be good to stay overnight in Sorrento for.
  • The sheer size and scope of Pompeii impresses me.  Even if you're kind of 'ruined out' from Rome, Pompeii's completely different b/c it's an entire city.  It's cool-- although I definitely think you need either a guide or a good map (the signage sucks).  I've been probably 12 times and I still use Rick Steves' map to navigate.

Whether or not to stay depends on you.  Naples gets a really bad rap, IMO, having lived here for 3yrs.  In fairness, it is a hard city, there is poverty and fewer English-options and less tourist conveniences.  That said, it has an amazing history (Greek, Roman, French, Spanish) and the archeological museum is a nice compliment to Pompeii.

Sorrento is pretty, but personally, if I wanted to stay down here but not in the city, I'd opt for Ravello.

  • It's worth it.  We did it on our way from Sorrento to Castellana.  If you can squeeze a night in Sorrento, I would.  It's beautiful!
