When did/will you put your kiddo into a booster?

I've seen 3 different kids on my FB recently already in boosters (backless!).  These kids are all younger than my dd who will be 5 in March.  DD has been asking to go into a booster the past few months, but I'm trying to hold off until she's at least 5.  She will be in a full booster, though.  When did you or will you put your kiddo into one?  I've read the suggestions on the CDOT site, but they're pretty flexible.

Re: When did/will you put your kiddo into a booster?

  • Never, hopefully. I'll keep her in the 5 point harness until she outgrows it by weight (I think hers is 50 lbs). If we have to go to something bigger, I'll do something like the Graco Argos that can do 5 point until 70 lbs.
  • N doesn't even know boosters exist.  All he knows is the 5 point harness car seat and I plan to keep him in it for at least a few more years. I think ours goes up to 80 pounds.
  • We did the 4-and-40 rule with W:  4 yrs old and 40 pounds, but it's one with a full back and shoulder belt guide on the side.

We do have a backless one as a back-up or if we're transporting one of his classmates home with us once a week, but 95% of the time he's in the one with the back.

  • I think there is something to be said about maturity and learning to sit right in a booster.  After all, how will they be on school bus?

  • I want to keep them in the 5 pt harness until 65 lbs, which our seat is rated for, I don't know if I'll be able to do that, but I'm going to try. Then I'll go to the high back booster before even thinking of going to the backless booster.  We'll see how the kids start acting once they start getting bigger.  We have a nautilus so at least we don't have to buy anymore car seats!

  • We just moved DD to a seat that can be used as a backless booster, but still has the back and harness for now.   I believe the recommendation is 40lbs and she's not close to that and even if she was, she would still be using the harness.

  • we put DS in a full back booster right before his 6th birthday.  BUT - he didn't hit 40# until 5 1/2 years old and at just over 6 is holding steady at 43#.

  • J will be 7 in March- he's in a high back booster and will be for a long time.  I think he was 5 1/2 when we put him in the booster vs. the 5 point.
  • DD1 is four and still in her Marathon, although she's on the highest shoulder strap setting.

I think we still have six months at least before she outgrows that. I'm starting to look at the next iteration of five-point harness. No way am I ready to put her in a booster alone.

I figure we'll do something like the Britax Frontier or similar, and keep her in the five-point harness as long as possible, then convert it to a booster at some point way in the future. :) I think those have a shelf life of like 9 years, which is nice and gives us plenty of use-time.

  • DD, who is almost 5 and a half still uses her 5 point harness seat.  We do have a backless booster that we keep in the car in case someone needs to drive her somewhere in a pinch (grandma and grandpa, etc...).  She is 40lbs exactly.  If we went to a full time booster, it would have the back on it.  But she'll stay in her 5 point harness until she outgrows it.  I have noticed at kindergarten pick-up that more than half of the kids have transitioned to a booster.

  • In August, dd was barely 37 lbs so I'm curious where she is at now.  I guess I'll see how things go and get her weight at her 5 year check up.

  • Lucy is 5.5 and she still in a five point harness.  She will be until about November when Max moves into our convertible seat and Lexi moves into the seat Lucy currently uses, then she'll go into a booster.  She'll be 6.5 and in first grade.  I think that's long enough.  Then a high back booster, except when traveling and then we'll use a backless (maybe the bubblebum) as it rolls up very small.

Meh your kids your choice since you're following the laws.

I have no idea when I'll move him to a booster.  He's at the height limit on his Roundabout so I'm looking at the Frontier 85 and Nautalis  they both have high limits.  I kept him rear-facing until just before his 2nd birthday when he hit the height limit.  I'll probably keep with the theme which some might find a bit over-protective and keep him in a 5-point as long as reasonably possible.

Don't know if you know this but graco also has another seat called and Argos? I think it has higher weight and possibly height limits than the nautalis.

We will keep DD in a 5 point as long as possible. She only has about 5 inches left in her roundabout so as soon as she outgrows that we will turn her FF in a 5 point.

Thanks I'll throw that one on the list to look into.  :-)

  • We have a Nautilus and it's great. We plan to buy a second one for Finn who is around 36 pounds plus.  It has the feel of a booster, will convert into a booster, but still has the harness. I like that it sits lower to the seat than the Britax we are currently using for Finn.

We are still using the harness but honestly, I think Noah is getting a tad big for it. He's around 47 pounds and very tall.

I'm not ready to switch full time but we do use a regular booster (with back) when we travel or in dh's car. (Noah rides in it maybe once a month). He likes using the seatbelt and it seems very safe.

  • I don't think I kept them in 5 points that long.  Maybe to 4, maybe earlier?  I know both the laws and DOT recommendations have changed at least once since then, and I can't remember.

I know for sure they were only in boosters going to kindergarten though, and I remember fighting with DS2 all the time because he wanted out of a car seat early because he was so big.  I don't remember his weight, but he was easily wearing 4Ts on his 2nd birthday.

ETA:  I did use the full-backed boosters with the shoulder strap hooks, except for a while when I had a funky booster that was made use in the middle without a shoulder belt.

  • Wow, some of these responses are making me realize that N is just a shrimpy little guy.  He's only 36.5  pounds at 5.  No wonder I  think 5 seems early to move them.  My perspective is totally skewed.

I think we're headed this way.  Bryn is just at 40lbs and gets to ride in a booster in Grandma's car (maybe 3 times per month), but is in a 5pt in our car still.  He's been asking for awhile to be in a booster and I used to tell him, yup, when you're 40lbs.  Now I tell him that when he's 45 lbs he can ride in one always.  I bet by this summer that we're in a high back booster most of the time - right before he turns 6.

Are you united with the CCOKCs?

  • N was in a high-back booster seat around 4 1/2 and well over the 40 lb minimum.  Eli is just over 4 and still under the 40 lb minimum, so he'll probably be in 5-pt harness until around 5.

  • My oldest, who will be 6 in 3 weeks is in the 5-point harness of the Graco Nautilus and will be until he grows out of it.  He does ride in a high-back booster in my dad's car though, maybe once a month at the most.  He hit 40 lbs just recently and at nearly 6 is probably no more than 42-43 lbs.

My just-turned-4-year-old is still in a Britax Marathon, 36 lbs and will not be moving car seats for a very long time.
