Lurker looking for ideas

Okay, this is a strange friend of a friend situation that I unfortunately have limited information on, and I am hoping for some ideas. A friends neighbor needs to re home his dog, a Kelpie. This dog has bit someone (I have no idea how bad or if reports have been filed) Apparently the owner wants to keep the dog, but the neighbors want to dog gone. I was asked by my friend if I knew of any way to help this dog so he doesn't end up being but down. Now I don't know anything about Kelpies but I figure this dog is not exercised enough and was not trained properly. I have suggested getting a trainer that specializes in herding dogs (that's what Kelpies are right?) and keeping the neighbors informed on what is happening, having them talk to the trainer ect. so they know that the owner is taking appropriate measures to fix the problem. I know that the neighbors may not be satisfied with this, so I was trying to research any type of rescue that would take a dog with bite history, but I don't know where to start on that front. Does any one have any advise? websites are anything they would be willing to share? I hope that this makes sense, I know its probably confusing, but I just want to try to help this dog. Thank you for any help.

Re: Lurker looking for ideas

  • Rehoming a dog with a bite history is tricky. There are legal liabilities -- most rescues will not take them. Not to mention, not a huge demand by the adopting public.
  • I know, I am really trying to get this guy to go the trainer route, I gave him the number of a trainer and am hoping that it will work out. I was just hoping that someone had some idea/ info that I couldn't come up with. I don't know this dog or the owner, (I have been communicting with the owners friend) but I had nightmares about this dog getting put down last night :( . I just figured that this board might have some resources or information that I didn't, i figured it was worth a try :)

You are a great friend for being concerned about the dog. I think the lack of responses on here is because we know so few details about what happened and also because I think most of us hesitate to give advice on a serious situation like a bite unless we can be sure we're giving advice that is on point and truly helpful.

If I were in your friend's shoes, my first actions would be to schedule a vet visit to rule out any medical problems, then call up a behaviorist (not a trainer... see the different under this link from the board's FAQ). A behaviorist will look not just at the dog's behavior but at the underlying physical and mental state of the dog and he or she can suggest a combination of training, conditioning, tools and, if necessary, medications to get the situation under control. (A trainer would only help with the training aspect, not the other facets).

That's the best advice I can offer. GL to your friend!

  • Thank you very much I will suggest the vet visit and give them the number of a behaviorist. I think I went straight to trainer because I found one who works with Kelpies. I know that the lack of details is annoying I also know very little, I think the person that got bit was riding by on a skate board. Why the dog was (I assume) unleashed and/or unsupervised is beyond me. Thank you for the suggestions though :)
