late night confession...judge away.

I have never been able to say "statistics" correctly, even when I really REALLY try. Andplusalso, I never realized I said mar-sca-pone until Jax pointed it out in the Ant thread.

Judge me! ;-)

Bet you thought this was going to be way more interesting, huh?

  • Yes

PS - I sat here going, "mar-sca-pone. mar-sca-pone.  What is wrong with that?  Is it "mar-sca-pony?" Big deal."

    Then I realized ohhhh it's "mas-car-pone."  Wait maybe it's "mas-car-pony."

    Ahhhh fuggetaboutit. ;-)

     Me too. Embarrassed

But in my defense, I don't think I've ever actually said the word out loud, (only in my head when I read it). It's not a topic that comes up in my day-to-day conversations.

um, until you spelled that out, i still didn't get it.....i was just thinking in my head, "well i *know* i say it right so Jax must've just not written it out correctly on how it drives her batty"

in my defense, i've learned to say it from Giada. and Giada is always right. espescially when she says speeeeh-geeeeh-tiiii

    mass-car/cer-pone. pone rhymes with phone.

But honestly MARscapone bugs me much less than seeing people write about carmel topping or carmelizing.  :)

  • Fun fact of the day - these are all examples of the metathesis of a word:

    http://grammar.about.com/od/mo/g/metathesisterm.htm

    Nucular instead of nuclear

    Asteriks instead of Asterisk

New Braunsful instead of New Braun-fels

    Aks instead of Ask

    Breafkiss instead of Breakfast.

    Marscapone instead of Mass-car-pone

Car-mul instead of Care-ah-mel [ETA oops - this isn't metathesis, just dialect preference]

    Geeked

    It's like dyslexia of speech.

DH says Chipotle that way, "Chip OLE TAY" ....I once shoved a Chipotle cup in his face "LOOK at the order of the letters - the T is BEFORE the L!!"....It drove me crazy until I was at HEB, sampling a Mango Chipotle cheese ball and the woman working the gourmet cheese section said it the same way - and then I looked at the sign and label for the cheese ball and they actually had the word SPELLED that way "Chipolte" .... so I've given up.

    Found this for us:

    Etymology

The word chipotle, which was also sometimes spelled chilpoctle and chilpotle, comes to English originally from the Nahuatl word chilpoctli by way of Mexican Spanish. The Nahuatl word chilpoctli means "smoked chile", formed from chil (="chile pepper") + poctli (="smoke"). The original Nahuatl word was spelled "pochilli" and has apparently become reversed. Today it is commonly misspelled and mispronounced as chipolte, an error of metathesis. Other early spellings from Mexico are tzilpoctil, tzonchilli and texochilli. The most common pronunciation is chee-POHT-lay, although some of those who are aware of this word's Nahuatl roots prefer the more historical pronunciation chee-POHT-til. Some Mexicans refer to chipotles as chile poctle.

  • DH says chi pot el because he says they didn't draw the accent on so he doesn't need to pronounce it with an accent over the e.

the marscopone thing didn't occur to me, even staying in italy for six months I never heard it pronounced differently.

"Chip-ah-TOT-le!  Chipoodle."  I loved that old JITB commercial when he is screwing up the pronounciation of it and his mouth becomes a squiggly line!
