Ladies tracking calories...

How do you manage being starving all the time?

I haven't had a lot of time to exercise this week, so I'm trying to keep my calorie intake down.  I eat A LOT, and normally, that doesn't matter too much because I can squeeze in enough exercise to balance it out.  This week, not so much.  I'm still hungry even after I go over my calorie limit.

Am I eating the wrong foods and not getting filled up enough when I do eat?  Maybe I just need to chow on carrots and celery when I feel starving.

  • So I mainly count calories as my way of "dieting".  It's really been the only thing that has ever worked for me.  I exercise every once in a while (more when its nice and sunny outside, not cold and gloomy) but I still make sure that I count calories.  I get a bit crazy about it.  I've even got DH counting calories!!!

The best advice I can give you is more protein less carbs and eat a ton of veggies.  I love love love carbs in every shape and size.  That was my biggest issue.  I made it a priority to cut my carbs down.  And when I say cut carbs, I don't mean fruit and healthy high fiber carbs (although, you need to watch it because those have a lot of calories, despite being really healthy), I mean chips and bread and pasta and sweets.  Basically all of the fun stuff Wink

Also as Mere said, drink water, or tea or crystal light or even a diet soda.  It will really help curb your appetite a bit.  Even gum or small hard candies help.  Basically you just need to find a system that works for you.

I usually have coffee with some cream in it and a greek yogurt for breakfast, a lean cuisine or leftovers for lunch. I bring apples to snack on all day if I get hungry or I feel like my blood sugar is getting low.  I usually drink at least a few glasses of water during the day, then I go home and cook a healthy meal.

Last night it was shredded chicken with taco seasoning, diced tomatoes and corn all mixed together.  Then I put that on top of a salad with tomatoes, onions, cheese, sour cream and some salsa on top.  All in all, it was about 300 calories for dinner, and it consisted of mostly veggies and proteins, with a little dairy mixed in.   I even had enough calories left over to eat a bowl of ice cream last night!!! Yum!

I don't know if that really helps, but it's what works for me!

Short Version: Less crappy carbs, more protein, more water

This is great - thanks!  I currently eat a ton of fruits and veggies, but like you said the other day, fruit has kind of a lot of calories.  It's frustrating because I know it's healthy, but it's not that filling.  I think I need to up my protein for sure and make sure my snacks don't have a lot of sugar - I love granola bars and yogurt, but if you're not careful, they can be super sugary.  I'm trying to eat a lighter lunch (BIG salads) so I can splurge a little more for dinner.

I think part of my problem, too, is that I LOVE roasted veggies - super healthy, again, but the olive oil makes them high calorie.  Maybe I'll try an olive oil cooking spray or something so I can better control the amount.

To get protein, I usually eat greek yogurt.  Like right now I'm eating some plain Dannon Oikos greek yoguert (I added some honey).  It is 80 calories and 15 grams of protein, plus a tbsp of honey is 60 calories (all carbs, but delicious!).  You could throw in some fruit or granola if you wanted.

I don't.  It sucks.  When I'm serious about counting my calories, I'm always hungry.  Although, usually after a couple of days of starving, my stomach starts to get used to smaller portions and I don't want to hit someone with a stick and steal their chips. Well, I don't want to as badly. Stick out tongue

Greek yogurt is awesome for helping fill the void. But watch out for the flavored ones, they can be high in sugar.  I like Fage.  I also like to eat a few sea salt almonds if I feel like I'm dying. They are higher in fat/calories, but the good kind and they really help curb the appetite.

  • I wouldn't say I count calories, but I am more aware of my calorie intake. I use MFP to get information, but I don't use it everyday. I drink water, and I try to eat slower. When I was in the Army we would have "2-minute drills", but even before that I was a fast eater. So now I try to set my food down. Talk. Drink water. Read. DO SOMETHING in between bites.

And yes.. lots of veggies. But find what you like! Don't resort to "rabbit food" because you feel like that's the only way.
