what is the typical class size for k-5?
we went to an open house at st. benedict school in holmdel this week. we really liked it, but each classroom had ~30 kids (maybe a few less - but not more).
i thought that was a lot. when i was a kid (in public school), i think we had ~22-25 kids in each class. do you think 30 kids in a class is a lot? what do you think the average is (be it public or private)?
Re: what is the typical class size for k-5?
K for us is about 17-21.
First and Second grade was 19 and 21.
I know that once they get to like 4th grade it can go up to 25 but I have never seen more than 25 in a class in our elementary and it goes to 5th grade.
This is a good question!
I know growing up public was 22 kids and when I went to Catholic is was like 30. The kindergarden classes at St. Rose had an aide though.
we had kindergarten registration yesterday, and currently, our public school has three K classes with 18 kids in each. I assume it will be somewhat similar next year unless there was some major baby boom in our area.
i remember a larger class, and it was only half day for me. my mom concurred when i asked her last night.
Where I teach K and 1 are always less than 20.
2-5 can vary, but I think 24 is about the largest. And believe me, 6 extra kids can make a huge difference!
Aidan's K class is the biggest in his school at 25; it may be slightly smaller now because I think a few kids moved out of town. Each K class has a teaching assistant. I went in recently to help out with the holiday party. The two teachers are excellent at managing the classroom, but I can tell it's exhausting. I think 5 more kids in Aidan's class would be mayhem.
hi there! do you live in holmdel? i ask because we are in the process of figuring out where we will send our son (turning 4 in march) for pre-k and k. the part-time options offered by the school district just don't work for our family. have you looked at any other places?
i will say that we send our son to a local, private pre-school now and his class just increased in size to 34 kids!!!!!!!!!!! it's a little insane.

no, we live in aberdeen. we haven't looked anywhere else. our kids are currently in DC and will be until DS starts K in 2013 (he will be 4 in may). (we are just putting out feelers to see what else it out there and to be honest, we don't really know others that are this close to us).
other than the class size, we really liked the school. it really felt like a very nice community, the kids were all really well behaved, etc. some of the rooms did seem cramped w/so many kids. DH said he counted some rooms w/less than 30 kids, but for the most part, there were ~30.
Must be the time of year for new kids. We've had 4 new since mid January.
Zach had 11 in his kindergarten class, 21 in first grade and 21 in second grade. Eliza has 18 in her kindergarten class. The school has less teachers than it did a few years ago and the class sizes have really grown. I can't imagine a class with more than 25. I never had more than 24 when I was teaching.
