have you ever called 911?
this is a totally random question, not even sure where it came from.
I've never called 911, or any non-emergency number for that matter. But sometimes on the boards I get the feeling that there are people who have called numerous times. It seems very bizarre to me, not because I think they're wrong to do it, but just because it is so far outside my own life experience.
Re: have you ever called 911?
I dialed 9-1- and then passed out when I filetted my finger. I consider this a good thing, as I didn't need an ambulance for a cut finger. haha. I think I felt myself losing it and thought "omg there is no one here and I'm going to bleed out right here on the floor."
And I may have dialed 911 when I was little when my gma had an episode, but I'm not positive if it was me or my brother who called.
I called 911 once when I was in college. My gf and I were spending a weekend in Palm Beach with her family and her cousin had a seizure while she was driving. It was absolutely one of the scariest things I've ever seen. After calling 911, I then called my dad. At 2 a.m. And he was four hours away. I was panicked and didn't know what to do! LOL. But Dad said he appreciated that I would always call him in an emergency.
Cousin was fine, btw.
More recently, I had to call the non-emergency number a few weeks ago when there was what I swear was a rabid racoon in our front yard and front porch. He was there for at least an hour just walking/swaying back and forth along our path to the front door. H and I turned out all of the lights so that we could better see the deadly racoon and were peering out the windows forever. H actually got his headlamp out lol. ETA: This was us:
So I called my mom (again with the calling my parents in any emergency - big or small hah) and she said to call the police in case it was rabid. Long story short, they said there wasn't anything they could do and send me in all kinds of circles and our neighbor found the racoon dead in his front yard the next morning.
Wow, that's scary!
I forgot I called 911 when my car was stolen and when I came home and found out our house was broken into.
Now that I think of it... I've tried to call twice.
The first time was in highschool, I was riding in my boyfriends car on the freeway and I don't even remember the whole story, but apparently we pissed some other car off and they were trying to run us off the road... he was going like 140mph+ to try and get away, maybe they had guns or something? I don't know. Anyway, there wasn't cell service where we were so the call didn't go through.
The last time was when I was in college... I was at a boyfriend's cabin in the woods one night (it was me, him and his sister) and we were asleep in the living room... suddenly we woke up and half of the house was on fire. There was no smoke detector and it was a wood cabin so the whole thing was engulfed in a matter of minutes. We barely made it out the door and I only had the cordless phone in my hand and tried to call 911 but the phone was already burned so it wouldn't go through. We had to wait for someone to see the smoke from the freeway to call in. Luckily his dogs found a way out (they were missing for a while), but they both lost everything. Sad.
So glad everyone got out ok, but that's horrible!
I have called twice when I've seen/heard car wrecks happen. Both times, someone had already called and help was on the way. They just asked for my number.
When I was 15 or so, my brother called it for me. I had passed out in my moms arms. She yelled for him to call 911. He was 9 at the time at did so right away. Meanwhile, it must have startled me and I "woke up" asking if every one was ok and why we needed 911. I had crazy periods for awhile in my teens and would pass out regularly. That was the first time it happened. Docs didn't know why. Weird.
Just once, we witnessed a horrific accident. A truck skidded down an icy highway lane then rolled thru the bank and across oncoming traffic on I-74, landed upside down on the berm. DH pulled over and ran back to the truck to help the people trapped inside. He yelled at me to call 911 as he was sprinting back. Two other cars stopped to help. I was pretty much in shock, I was bawling as I tried to tell the 911 operator what was going on.
He's much braver than me, obviously. But since he's a certified First Responder with work, it was natural to him to run towards the blood/people in trouble. I then called my parents and bawled to them while the ambulance showed up. The people ended up being ok, concussions and maybe broken bones, but seat belts saved them.
I'm surprised at how many times I've called.
- dh and i saw a car drive off the freeway right in front of us in cali, like airborne from an elevated spot and crash into trees. dh stopped immediately and ran down the embankment yelling at me to call 911. Like ash i'm not the best in emergency situation. I was shaking and dialed wrong at my first attempt. The second try I totally slowed down and verbally said 911 as I dialed. In the meantime dh had rapid-fired 'assess the situation' type questions to the guy in the car.
- another time was when our neighbor's gardener thought he chopped his finger off that I've posted on here about. while I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off and fell with James in my arms, dh hung up on 911 grabbed a towel and a cup filled with ice and rushed the guy over to baptist south.
- on southside about a yr ago I saw a guy stop 'his' car in the middle of the street, jump out leaving his car door open and run....very suspicious.
- in college before I had a cell phone I saw a really, really bad accident on the freeway at about 3am, so I pulled over and used a call box by the side of the road.
