We woke up to HPD ringing our doorbell at 4:30am. We inadvertently left our garage door open (long story - housekeeper stayed late causing us to both park in the driveway instead of in the garage and we forgot to move the cars).
They came in through the garage in the front of the house, took our work bags and diaper bag from the dining room, walked through the kitchen and picked up a bottle of vodka, proceeded through to the living room and stole both our laptops, our Nook, and Canon Rebel. They also went through both cars.
HPD was responding to another burglary in the neighborhood (backdoor was kicked in) and drove by our house and saw our bags/papers strewn across the yard.
We have an alarm but do not use it regularly (that will change!). We have THREE dogs. Our little Boston Terrier barked once but was crated. Our lab nudged DH and whimpered but that was it. All our bedrooms are upstairs thankfully.
It is an awful feeling knowing strangers were in our home. We had a false sense of security living in a gated community and having 3 dogs. You never think someone will break in to your home KNOWING you are there.
PLEASE - use your alarm and keep those doors locked!
Re: Our house was broken into and WE WERE HOME SLEEPING!
Wow, that's scary. Glad everyone is physically OK.
wow, so scary. I'm glad you are safe. its amazing how many of us never set our alarms. we do in our current house but never did in our old house.
Ditto!
Exactly this.
We don't put on our alarm every single day. Thank you for reminding us that this can happen anywhere.
You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted and used against you. My Blog
I'm so so sorry you've experienced this, but so so glad you're safe! We were robbed a couple of years ago (during the day while we were not home, though) and it was the most heart wrenching and unsettling feeling - I can't imagine that feeling of violation compounded with the fact that you were home as it happened. So scary.
It may seem random, but DH and I (DH especially) found that feeling a little hard to shake. If you find yourself in the same predicament, google the psychological effects of home invasion and there are lots of tips. We found rearranging rooms and changing the place up a bit really helped us feel comfortable again. (And yep, we use the alarm religiously now!)
That's crazy and horrible! I'm obsessed with checking our garage door. We've had lots of break ins in our area. Probably the same people. The "kick in the back door" seems to be their standard move. Glad you're safe!
M looks just like you BTW. So cute!
Wow. That is crazy.
The same thing happened to my parents when someone broke in through their garage window and came inside our laundry room. I was actually sleeping on the couch in the living room. If they walked around a corner they would have seen me...and actually might have.
So Tasty, So Yummy
That's so scary! Glad everyone is okay.
My in-laws have a cop in their cul-de-sac and they STILL had break-ins on their street. Even the cop's car was broken into.
