She looks happy and tired. I'm happy everything turned out alright.And yeah, she doesn't look bad in the dress.

Yes she did have to wear it. I can't imagine wanting to wear a mini skirt with mess panties and enormous pads but more power to her.
Could she get away with a lighter pad just for the ride home (and of course a mini photo shoot) or is my childless self underestimating the mess?

No. I will not horrify you with what comes out of you the day after you give birth. But a "lighter pad" would just result in an enormous mess.

I would put $5 on she threw the dress on for a photo and then changed into some sensible slacks for the ride home. Unless they live next door to the hospital or something.
