First off, can I say that the progress ticker that tells me I'm behind is stressing me out? I know I have the type of career where I cram a years worth of work into 9 months, so times like now I'm lucky to sleep let alone read, and then in the summer I'll get to a few books a week, so it will even out, but still.
Anyway, what qualifies as a book for the challenge? Obviously books like novels, biographies, etc, that I haven't read yet. What about short story or poetry collections?
Also, what about books I read, but in HS, and want to read again? Like the classics I read in AP English, not kids books. I've been in a kick where I've been trying to reread books I read when I was a teenager, now that I'm older but with a different perspective.
Remember, I read these books almost 20 years ago (I was younger the first time I read them than the amount of time that has elapsed since). What do you think?

2012 Reading Challenge
I think you can define it however you want. I would count everything you mentioned. Last year I reread all the Harry Potter books and counted them.
I think the challenge because you can also track the number of pages you read, which means something because I read a few 200 page books, but also some 1,000 page books.
Oh, and I am way behind. I try to not look at the ticker because I know I go through spurts where I will read 3 books in a week.

Absolutely I would count re-reads towards your count!
And I love your perspective that you fit 12 months of work into 9 months
I've only been reading 200-250 page books so far this year. January was a more relaxing month so I was able to read several books. We reviewing in class for 2 weeks, so I didn't have lessons to prep or things to grade. Then we had exams for a week and I graded while the next class took the exam. Then we started with the new semester. Things are back to normal now and I hate that I don't have as much time to read.
What books are on your re-read list?
