Ok talk me down

I feel totally nuts right now but I want to know if you would take your child to the doctor for this. Julia always has bruised shins. She is a tough little girl and Is always running at full speed and playing hard. I do worry but I know she gets bumped from time to time. Two days ago she had a bruise on her stomach. It's light purple. I worried about that for a day and dismissed it. This morning she has a large (well...1 inch diameter) dark purple bruise on her back, not on any bony area, on the soft part of her side. Again, she plays hard and doesn't usually cry if she bumps something. I don't want to call the ped and sound nuts, but I do want a blood test done to check for an infection. Do I call them? I don't want to be an alarmist but I don't like the fact she's getting these bruises from seemingly nowhere.

Re: Ok talk me down

  • I would call.  If your gut is telling you to call, then call.  Better safe than sorry even though I am sure she is fine.

  • I may be in minority and have no experience with this but I would call.  I would rather have her checked out and it be nothing than not do anything out of fear that I would be labeled an alarmist.  Just my opinion.  Hugs!
  • I bruise easily and will wake up with bruises and have o idea how I got them. That said, if it doesn't seem right, call the ped.

  • She could have an iron deficiancy or be anemic. Its wortha  call to TALK to them at the very least.
  • I am gonna call. Doesn't hurt and they are nice. I am thinking back to yesterday. We were in Target and she was losing it in the cart, trying to get out and twisting all sorts of ways. That's probaby where this bruise came from.
  • if she is getting random brusies for no reason, then i would call.  when is the last time she had her bloodwork done? 8 months ago? get her iron levels checked...let her be looked at...
  • Thanks ladies!

This for me.  I went through a phase a few years back where I bruised constantly.  I remember being in Cabo for a wedding and H flipping me over in the pool goofing around and I ended up w/ a huge hand shapped bruise on my upper arm.  It was ugly and seemed to last forever.  He barely touched me.  I talked to my dermatologist about it (only b/c she was the dr I happened to have an appt w/ soon after coming back).  She mentioned iron deficiency and that was what it turned out to be.
Being it's your child, I would def call, but I'm sure it will turn out to be something like this.

I agree with Marie.  And I always regret not following my instincts and calling when I think something is wrong.

  • I'm the same way too. I bruise very easily.  But I would call. Just to be sure. Hope all is fine and its just bruises that come and go and nothing serious.

  • Like the PPs have said, I would call.  It is better for your peace of mind, especially going in to a weekend.

I hope it is nothing :)

  • Mia frequently has bruises on her shins and in other random areas. I would say it's a pretty common thing but I would also say if something is telling you it's worth a call, call. There's no harm done in putting your mind at ease!

  • I woudl definitely call and at least TALK to them and explain the situation.  Theonly thing I would worry about if it was something genetic with her blood that you would obviously not know about.  It can't hurt - and who cares if you sound crazy!  that's YOUR baby and you want to protect her, so dont' worry!!

Dana, that was my exact thought. We don't know an entire half of her background
  • Just to ease my own mind I would call.

  • Ok went in. Saw doctor, she said bruising doesn't look like typical toddler bruising BUT that toddlers are capable of anything so it's not off the table that she just bumped into something. Her liver and spleen don't feel swollen so that's good. We were sent to nearby hospital to get bloodwork so they could get results today. Again....that part freaked my husband out but it's just because they can't do it that fast and we won't have to wait. So that's good. Just waiting for results. If anything maybe she just bruises easily.
