HS Teachers/Parents, come in please

We're leaving our little K-8 bubble.  We have 9th grade information night next week with DS1 at the local HS, and I can't even think of what I should ask.

I know he'll get info on class descriptions and a form to choose them.  I'm pretty sure we either have a tour or can just walk around & figure out where things are.  Beyond that, I'm clueless.

Suggestions?

Questions on a tardy/absence policy.

Graduation requirements.

Make sure he knows what happens if he fails a class (ie he'll have to repeat it if it's required)  Also make sure he knows how GPA is figured out (that easy class as a Freshman counts as much as the calculus as a senior, so don't mess it up!)

Maybe questions on activities and fees.

Those first 3 questions are mostly for his benefit (though 2 is important for you to know too)

From my experience a well done info night won't leave you with many questions because they'll cover the important stuff and what you do think of will likely be asked by other parents as well.

I think the more important thing about info night is that it opens the door to have the important discussions at home or in the car:

What did you think?

What are your concerns?

What do you think you'll enjoy about HS?

What do you think might be challenging?

 

The nuts and bolts will be spelled out for you. In my mind it was more about helping him think thru things and get mentally prepared.

Read the handbook/registration guide. Most nights like that aren't set up for Q & A, but if they are, I'd read first.

This exactly.  One of the things that has been an adjustment for us is now that you are leaving K-8 bubble more involvement is expected from the chid and much less from  the parent.
