would you go to the ped for this?

B tripped and fell at school yestday. She bit her lip in the process. It is HUGE. I mean HUGE right now and pretty gross. Not bleeding. Kind of scabby looking. She is talking a little funny b/c of the swelling and can only drink out of straws. She can eat fine. Her teeth seem fine. We are giving her all the ice pops she wants but that is about all we are doing.  I'm thinking that there is no need for a ped visit since there really anything to do other than wait for the swelling to go down. Wanted other moms' opinions though.

  • awww, poor B!  I probably wouldn't go - I don't think there is much they could do.
  • I wouldn't go or call unless there were signs it got infected.

  • As long as her teeth are ok and she can eat and drink, I wouldn't bother. My only hesitation is if you think she needs stitches, but 24 hours later,if it's already scabbing, I don't even think they could stitch it.

I agree here unless she is complaining it really hurts.

I actually needed stitches because of biting my lip during a fall but it was bleeding A LOT.

  • I would probably just call them, you can speak to a nurse directly at my pedi...if yours offers same then try that.  Poor baby...hope she feels better.
  • oh man i did that when i was learning how to ride my bike.......POOR kid. as long as you cleaned everything out and you don't think she needed stitches then no i wouldn't go

poor kid. i lived on eating/drinking out of straws for like a month (mine was BAD)

  • As long as it's still not bleeding and all of her teeth seem fine and she's not complaining - I wouldn't call - I don't think there is anything they can do.  My daughter fell last night and cut her lip/inside her mouth and my first instinct was to call the ped, but then I said - let me just wait and see if the bleeding stops and that her teeth were ok.  I don't think there is much else you can do except give it time to heal.
  • Andrew took a bad fall a few weeks ago.  HUGE fat lip, had a blood blister from pooled blood on the lip etc.  Like you I checked his teeth and he was fine so we just gave him tons of ice pops.  The swelling took a few days to go down, blister popped but he was fine after that.  The scab fell off like 4 days later.   Nothing more you really can do.  Hope she feels better soon.
