Excessive thirst with grain-free food? Getting used to it?

Has anybody else experienced this?

We switched Dex on Tuesday to Taste of the Wild High Prairie Puppy from Wellness in hopes of calming down his skin inflammation and scratching!

Overall, he seemed to really like it the first few days! He ate it all right up to our surprise (he usually takes FOREVER to eat) and it was coming out much quicker!  His scratching started to diminish and all seemed to be going well!

And then last night happened.

He drank 2 full bowls of water, which is a lot for him in one sitting.  He kept scratching at his bowl so we gave him a few icecubes.  His poop was pretty soft.

This morning, he peed on the floor...twice.  I cannot even tell you the last time he had a pee accident in the house.  And it was A LOT. Think a lake, when he usually pees a pond lol. He then proceeded to drink 2 more full bowls and not touch his food.

Anybody else have a similar situation?  Maybe the food is too rich for him and he is getting dehydrated?  Anything I could change?

TIA!

Re: Excessive thirst with grain-free food? Getting used to it?

  • I'm curious to the responses this post will get.

I just switched Rosco Cat to Taste of the Wild cat food around the same time you started your pup. I've also noticed he is drinking more.

I can't tell if it's "good" that he is drinking more or if its a sign of something else.

  • Now that you mention it, maybe it is the food?  Gloria's on TOTW and she drinks a lot, but I just assumed I had a thirsty dog.

His poop is probably soft because you are switching foods, I think that is normal.  If he's anything like G you can look forward to nice, solid eliminations in the near future.

  • Thanks ladies!

Hopefully this helps with his issues!  I was just watching him take down water like it was his job and was surprised!

  • Quick question: are you doing a gradual transition from Wellness to TOTW? Or did you just give him straight up TOTW and cut out the Wellness completely? A hard switch of foods like that can cause most dogs some digestive upset! Could explain the soft poos.

  • We have been putting a little bit in, bit the vet suggested just going cold turkey since it was allergy related. Tuesday was abouthalf and half, Wed about a 1/4 cup wellness, yesterday just a little little bit and today we just went with the TOTW. Not the best way to do it, but our vet was pretty worried about his face irritation and wanted him off grains ASAP lol. I'll deal withthe poop if he feels better! I just can't get over this water consumption

  • I pour about 1/4 or 1/2 a cup of water in kibble so it will expand before the dogs eat. It cuts back on the excessive thirst and reducing the risk of bloat.
  • Look at the ingredients, I'm not as familiar with the dog formula of TOTW as I am the cat, but I have to wonder if they are not adding some form of sugar to the food to made it taste better, and it is causing a rush in sugar levels similar to people with diabetes.

OP, good for your vet for suggesting a diet change instead of continuing to ignore the issue to get your dog to come in more/make more $ for them! This is a trend we need to see more often. I hate seeing poor dogs with skin and ear infections caused by allergies to grain but the vet wont say anything cause the meds are too much of a $ maker for them...
  • Hi there - I work with Taste of the Wild and I hope it's OK that I comment on this thread.

I just want to suggest you give Taste of the Wild a call to talk with one of their on-staff veterinarians. They can best answer your questions. They're number is 800-977-8797.

I feed my Mini-Dachshund, Molly Jane, Taste of the Wild and I haven't seen anything like what you mention. However, she's been on it for almost a year, so I don't remember how things were when we first transitioned to the food.

  • I was just wondering if there was any update you could give? I just recently switched to Taste of the Wild and have been noticing an increase in water consumption. Did this problem go away?
