Does anyone walk their dog with roller blades?

Or can you even buy roller blades anymore? I used to love them when I was a kid.

I feel like my dog would be a great running companion, but unfortunately I hate running, but feel like I could get into roller blading again. Does anyone here or use roller blades to exercise their dog? Any thoughts? Just a random thought for the morning. =)

Re: Does anyone walk their dog with roller blades?

  • When we were teenagers, my brother did with our dog. She loved it! He even made the local paper with a pic, when a reporter saw him on the road being pulled by our dog.

I imagine this could be dangerous in tricky traffic areas or with a dog that isn't fantastic on a leash, but my bro never had any troubles.

  • I have roller blades but never use them. Embarrassed

I could see it being an issue if your dog pulls though.

Nelson will trot alongside my skids when they are bike riding and they haven't had any issues.

  • We have.  I don't generally, but Tom takes our dog.  I will say you have to be very, very careful.  He allows Kali to pull him but she stops when he says to and will then go back to being next to him.  If you have a dog that's just going to go crazy and pull you down the street, you're going to end up hurt.

  • Yes be very careful if there is a chance your dog will pull you. I almost killed myself as a teenager thinking this would be a good idea. It wasn't.

  • Oh gosh I have no intention of her pulling me (didn't even think of that). I was thinking it would be good exercise for me too. We have worked d@mn hard on loose leash walking and would make sure it translated to loose leash rolling too.
  • Yup, I do!! Well, I did before I blew out my knee & before Cooper had to have 2 knee surgeries!! We had so much fun! & Cooper was SO pooped after!

Even though he is a "trained" walker (as in, he doesn't pull me) I still wore (& highly recommend you do the same) a helmet & wrist guards. I can't do my job (or worse, live) w/a head injury....or a broken wrist, so thats why I chose to do those 2. At the very least I would wear a helmet!

Cooper doesn't particularily like things on wheels, ie: bikes or rollerblades, so that combined w/his walking "skills" makes rollerblading ideal for us, we would never bike w/him b/c he dislikes those even more then rollerblades (Im actually thinking/hoping of getting him into a doggie trailer so we can bike as a "family" b/c DH & I like it so much, & b/c I can do it even w/my knee injury).

& Enjoy! It can be so FUN! & a great workout for you both!! But BE CAREFUL!! Always be mindful of whats ahead of you/behind you! ESP other dogs! When we'd see dogs coming towards us, we'd pull over & wait till they'd pass us. You just never know what the oncoming dog is going to do...if they hate other dogs, they'll lunge at you, if they hate things on wheels, they'll lunge at you! The 1st & only time I ever fell while rollerblading w/a dog was b/c of another dogs reaction, not my own. I wasn't wearing a helmet at the time, went as$ over teakettle off the side of the trail....I was fine thankfully, aside from some serious roadrash, my dog was fine, but I was pretty shaken up.

    GL! & stay safe!
