There has apparently been an outbreak at DS' daycare, including his room. I found out yesterday when I picked him up via a sign on the door. When I inquired about it, the teacher said, "yes, so and so has had it for 3 weeks. Miss Director wouldnt' even come into our room today."
So, (a) Director is pregnant, (b) Director knows I'm pregnant (she was the first person we told so that I could get new baby on the list), (c) this has been an issue for 3 weeks, and (d) I was not alerted.
Would you be pissed? DH is hella-pissed.
I'm going in to my OB for bloodwork later this pm.
Re: Fifth Disease
Yes. You should have been notified.
Absolutely I would be upset. Especially since the Director knows you are pregnant. Why wasn't the notice up 3 weeks ago?
I have no idea!
The thing is, I probably would have gotten exposed b/c we can't yank DS out of daycare for that amount of time, so if he either got it or was a carrier monkey, I would likely have gotten exposed. However, I could have been warned, and we would have arranged for other pick-up so I didn't go into the daycare every day for the past 3 weeks, and risk the exposure myself. Also, I could have been ahead of the testing by 3 weeks.
Ugh, hoping the test today confirms I'm immune.
I'm just really pissed that the director would not let me know. Esp. b/c she wouldn't even go in the room. Hello!!!
I'm thinking this is an above-the-head-of-the-director issue. Straight to the owner. But then I also worry about the repurcussion. My most precious asset is there everyday. I don't want any different treatment of him (or us) going forward if I do raise h*ll.
Ya, I would be! I noticed that sign on their door yesterday when I got b. I figured this was a "new" thing, though. Not, a 3-wk old issue. Have you talked to Dr. Owner? I'd call and express your concern -- DEFINITELY!
You could always talk to the director first and just reiterate that you should have known and see how she reacts -- I think Dr. L should know, though!
Side note -- I didn't know Miss Director was pregnant!

I agree. I would be extremely upset about not be informed of a breakout that could affect my unborn child.
I don't think that was handled appropriately. That sign should've been up immediately. I know our daycare has stuff up frequently but there's never anything at the school. (why not?!?!)
The staff member should not have been telling you the name of the child either. That's a privacy issue. It only needs to be reported that there was a child in the center, or in that specific room/class who had Fifths Disease.
I'd at least call and say, "I wanted to call and clarify the procedure for alerting families about illnesses in the center. I'm worried because I'm pregnant and didn't realize that my son had been exposed to it for three weeks... yadda yadda." You don't have to be a jerk, but I think the fact that it took 3 weeks to be posted AND because they said the name, the director/owner at least needs to know that you're concerned. I'd probably go to the owner.
Something happened like this at our old daycare except it was that h1n1 and I was pregnant with Hannah.... I found out from another daycare parent and a friend who had a child in daycare which caught it. I was pissed and asked director about it and she confirmed. I pulled K out for a week because I didn't want us to catch it. (there was a lot of hype on the news back then)
I agree with Courtney. They expect to be told and therefore should tell everyone especially if it is outbreak.
I would check and see if HHS has any guidelines on notifying parents on these situations when it is a number of children who are sick.
