France Road Trip ?s

Good Morning All--

Trying to think warm thoughts of summer in freezing Feb.  H and I are planning to do a 2wk drive around France.  Avoiding the Riviera (traffic and we've been a few times).

Planning to go up to Annecy/Beaune then to Brugges (BE), down to Brittany/Normandie, Loire and then back to IT via Lyon.

Would be grateful any suggestions of must see towns (restaurants/vineyards) along that route.  I'm really torn on where to stay in Brittany/Normandie (too many choices)-- looking at Bayeux, Honfeur, and St Jacut (one not all three).

Just looking to relax, enjoy fabulous French food and wine.  Some culture is always good, but not looking to do a major museum junket on this trip.

Thanks in advance!

Re: France Road Trip ?s

  • We went to Sword Beach (Normandie area) and stayed at some kind of little place. The main building had a few rooms and served breakfast. The rest of the rooms were in a couple houses - one across the street and one down the block. I can't remember the name of it at all but DH booked it through Orbitz. Was quite the experience being in that area with all the history and I definitely recommend.

We had one major issue with driving France - getting petrol in more remote areas. Places literally did not accept swipe-only credit cards. We did not have a chip and pin credit card. Especially difficult in towns (like Normandie area) on off times or where it was just a credit card filling station with no actual attendant.

  • I really like Etretat in Normandie. We have been several times and it is beautiful to walk around in for a day or so and has nice seafood and drinks :)
  • Thanks guys!

Seems like '12 is the year of gas drama (strikes part II here this week); so we will definitely do our best to keep the take full esp in the smaller towns.  Appreciate the heads up.

Off to google Etretat!  Can't wait for summer!

  • My in-laws live in Clamecy, which is an artistry area near Auxerre.  It's in the Chablis region and there are tons of beautiful vineyards in this area.  Plus starting in July they have great flea markets every weekend!

Good luck on your trip planning!
