2 playful dogs + wood floors, how to best clean?

My dogs are always playing outside with us, it's wonderful... except for my floors!  They're constantly covered with footprints, even rights after cleaning.

What safe products do you recommend?  I've used diluted vinegar mostly but was considering getting a steam mop.  Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks!!

  • After years of trying to find the easiest cleaning strategy, I found this gadget to quickly wash the dogs' paws when they come inside (especially for the one who digs).  It looks crazy, but is so awesome - I know it seems annoying to wash paws every time they come in, but it is so much better than constantly vacuuming/mopping.  It literally takes less than a minute per dog to wash their paws and blot them dry on an old towel.  Then I have a microfiber mop that I use at the end of the day to clean up any stray dirt (spray all-purpose cleaner on the floor and then mop - super quick).  I also have a steam mop, but I use it more for "real" cleaning (post-vacuuming) - I wouldn't haul it out every time the dogs come in.

  • Hello- I'm mostly a lurker here but I just wanted to add that I got a Shark Steam mop last Christmas and I love it! We have a dog and a cat and it works great for the little footprints on our wood floors. Best thing I've ever used!!
  • Thanks for the recommendations!!!
  • I wipe their paws when it rains, and I use my shark steam mop about once a month and spray the floor with Simple Green as I mop.  I try and sweep 2x a week.

I saw something similar to this at Target in their "Bullseye Bodega" section at the back of the store last week.  I think it was made by Pet Head.  I was with my mom and she picked it up and kind of laughed at it because neither of my dogs would let me use this on them without a huge struggle.

  • I just use a swiffer about once a week.  Beyond that, every time my dog goes outside as soon as he comes in I wipe his feet.  He's pretty used to it by now and it saves me so much time from cleaning my floors.  I just have an old towel by each door and use it when he comes in.
