Transporting rescues...

So as I've posted before, I have been searching for a female dachshund to rescue. I have stumbled upon one in Bridgeton, MO and mapquested that from my house and it says its a 4 1/2 hour drive. Have any of you ever helped transport a rescue to it's forever home? If we are able to get this beautiful girl, she'd be coming to central Indiana. The rescue says that for out of state adoptions that the adopter is responsible for transport. Thanks!

Re: Transporting rescues...

  • How big is your car?  The largest, most comfortable crate/carrier you can find will do the trick.  At least around where I live, highway rest stops have areas for your pets to do their business.  It won't be terribly fun for you or the dog--but it will be less traumatic for her than flying.
  • I drove my pup 5 hours when I brought her home.  Be sure to bring extra towel/blankets and papertowels, just in case she gets car-sick.  I would absolutely drive over flying her.

  • Maybe they'd be willing to meet you half way?

  • Well luckily the rescue that I talked to today is only 2 1/2 hours away. We are trying to get the references and home visit squared away so that when we go see the dogs, we can find the one that fits with us and take her home the same day :) Thanks though!
