IUD ladies - 6 weeks pp or wait?

I am making my 6 week appt and trying to decide if I want to get an iud put in then or wait. I've had a Mirena before, so I know the general pros and cons, 6 weeks just seems so early - I feel like I'll barely be healed from my c-section.

Did anyone else get theirs this early? Or wait?  DH is going to get a vasectomy soon, but it seems that doesn't cover you for birth control for at least a few months. We are definitely done having kids, so I'm trying to figure out a reliable solution in the meantime.

Re: IUD ladies - 6 weeks pp or wait?

  • I got mine at 8 - we talked about my options at 6 weeks and I scheduled the insertion. It wasn't ideal, because in between the two appointments I got my period and (unbeknownst to me) my doctor would rather insert during a period so it doesn't mess with your cycle.

I'd say if you're feeling healed enough to get it on (and thus need a reliable solution), you're probably healed enough to get the IUD put in. :)

  • I had mine at 6 wks. Set it & forget it, ya know ?!?

  • After E I had it done at 6 weeks and after Lance at 5 weeks.  Didnt hurt at all.

  • I had it done after O at 6w and it was fine (well, there was a complication putting it in, but that wasn't because I was 6wpp.)  That wasn't after a c-section, though.

  • The MW's policy was to wait until 8 weeks pp.  Since I had expelled an IUD prior (my first Paraguard) they had me wait until 10 weeks pp.  I barely felt insertion.

  • I had mine put in after Gavin at 6 weeks. After Hudson I think it was closer to 8 or 9 weeks but that was because I didn't get it at my OB's office, I went to Planned Parenthood because it was cheaper.

  • I got it at 6 weeks this time, but my doctor said there was slightly increased risk of uterine perforation and expelling it.  I decided to go for it anyhow and didn't have any problems.

  • I got it at 6w pp with my first kid, the 12w pp with my second.  12 seemed better in that I didn't have any cramping issue like I did the 1st time around.  Plus, I have to admit, I would rather wait 12w pp to do the deed.
